The city was plowed like sh*t - I work a few blocks from the Armory - THAT street isn't plowed ......... ??? !!
I was going to say something similar. the city is a mess. and I am right by city hall!
we have friends here from Spain right now and they were in times square last night and said it was very chaotic.

An 8:30 a.m. 911 call was made, with the caller saying the birth wasn't imminent, a Fire Department source told the Daily News. The call received a low priority, and the city unsuccessfully tried twice to contact the caller during the next few hours, the source said. A second, more urgent 911 call at 4:30 p.m. reported the woman was bleeding and the baby was crowning - and the call was upgraded to level two, the source said.
An hour later, the NYPD contacted the FDNY/EMS to report the baby had been delivered but was unconscious. Cops cut the umbilical cord and tried to revive the newborn, police source said.
The call was then upgraded to level one - highest priority - and an FDNY crew arrived in 12 minutes, sources said. EMTs were on the scene at 6 p.m.
this makes much more sense. a series of events *could* have caused the babies death, but we don't know how far along the baby was..it if was even at viability.
I want to know why no one in this girls family helped her move from the vestibule for all those hours. if you read the article, it states that a heart attack victim was dragged sled style to the hospital after the ambulance got stuck in a snow bank and LIVED. I am so sick and sad that this girl was not afforded the same help and ingenuity.
if she was already walking to the hospital, she couldn't have been that far (either to interfaith or Kings county). I don't think the reporting on this is fair. just adding fuel to the fire.
Exactly! I think the reporting is definitely adding fuel to the fire. If I was about to deliver, I think DH would somehow pull/push me to the hospital. If he wasn't around, I'd like to think our neighbors would help me.

Ok I just read the article again - Tragic for that poor innocent baby - tragic that the weather and city's crap job stopped EMS from getting to her on time, tragic that she had a moron for a mother who was WALKING to hospital ALONE in a snowstorm while she was in labor - Where was her boyfriend? Where were her friends? NO ONE was available to help her ?? Maybe you make a call to a family member when you're that desperate and in danger ?? !! - Tragic for that baby that the first idiot to get through to 911 didn't make her birth seem like a priority - in an effing snowstorm while her mother was in labor in a god damm hallway !!!
Blame the city for plowing like sh*t and dropping the ball - but hello? Blame the rest of the morons surrounding that poor baby for being in lala land !!

this is awful awful awful. but this is not the mayors fault. this is NYers fault. for NOT getting out on the road.
so many traffic jams were caused by people will ill equipped cars getting stuck. a fed ex truch was stuck in front of my building for 4 hours yesterday. why? what package was so important, Fed Ex? and if you NEEDED to get out there, why were you REAR WHEEL DRIVE trucks doing the delivery????
again, it is an awful terrible tragedy. and that poor girl.
but the blame cannot be placed squarely on the city's shoulders. it's our fault, as a collective.
my heart and prayers go out to all those who fell victim to the circumstances surrounding the blizzard.
I agree that its awful, I am burning in anger, I live in Brooklyn and everyone in our building and our block, who drives, cannot get out, because our entire block is not plowed. We have 4 feet of snow on the road, for the reason that the wind was so bad, it blew snow off the sidewalk of neighboring streets and onto this one. Weird street layout. But we are suffering big time.
BUT its not NYers fault! Is politics. Mayor cut a lot of sanitation budget. The higher ups wanted to show the Mayor a lesson. Really idiots, they are all on the forums saying "the mayor shouldn't have cut our salary and our people" ... that disgusting! What the hell, if you have the means to help, why are you sitting on your *** and saying I need more money to do it.
I might be biased, I really like Bloomberg, but I can clearly see he is taking a lot of poop for idiots that were hired before he came into office.
In Brooklyn its emergency status, its a disaster of huge proportions. This is worth than anything terrorists could have done.
The fact of the matter, Brooklyn is being ignored, big time. We the biggest borough in NYC, and the backbone of it! All the workers, all the doctors, firemen, everyone, where do you think they live for the most part, NOT Manhattan. And if they can't get out of their driveways, then a lot of people are screwed.
so many traffic jams were caused by people will ill equipped cars getting stuck.
this is a terrible assumption! I'm not flaming you, my sister made the same one!I went off like a mad woman on her. But I promise his will be less vile.
Doctors are getting stuck! It took DH 3 hours to get to the hospital that is 15 minutes away. He was driving 3 other doctors who could not get out of their driveways. There were stuck all over the place and the people that were stuck with them, who where they? Physicans Assistants. One was a rabbi going to a funeral. These are not just nyers getting stuck cause they are going shopping.
My grandfather passed away during the storm. I don't know why exactly yet, he was in the hospital, he was sick for a long time. We knew it was coming, but its a little suspicious since he was getting better. I didn't ask questions yet, I was just told to show up to funeral, today. But preparing a funeral and getting everyone together for it, is hell when everyone is stuck. I'm waiting for DH who somehow managed to get out even though they are short staffed at the hospital. And he told me he can't move there is a long line of cars sitting somewhere in borough park. I'm like are you kidding, in the middle of the day?
What are we supposed to do not have a funeral? Not go, postpone it. We can't. He was a religious man, we are trying to do everything as he would have wished. I'm even wearing a long skirt
I'm sorry this is my vent too, but really your blaming the wrong people. And I wish people would wise up. Politics should never be the cause of such suffering, pain and grief.

Let me start by saying normally one person can't be blamed but in this case...This was TOTALLY handled wrong by the MAYOR this is not the first snowstorm NYC had but he was totally concerned with clearing the city for shopping and the upcoming NYE celebration where the city can make money. Where I live we got no deliveries, no cars were in the street here it is 3 days later and our block still has not been plowed as a matter of fact they blocked us in some more as we are off a main street no emergency vehicle can come down my block...so I do blame BLOOMBERG and his non-chalant attitude toward the other 4 boroughs that make up NYC.

I know its easy to blame one person, please think it through.
I was on this blog badgering bloomberg all night last night this is my neighborhoods blog
A lot of people suffered, a lot of people probably died because of it. But think it through who really made the decision to plow or not to plow?
My theory is on a bitter upper management type who said lets pay bloomberg back for cutting our pay... it happens too often in the city. Bloomberg is not one to do favors for nothing. I can see how he could piss off some people.

i really normally dont blame one person...its not like me. BUT, after watching his press conference on monday he p!ssed me off. "its just another snow day" "i took the subway and it was fine" "enjoy the day with your kids...parks are open and offering free hot chocolate"
im also bitter how he mentions all city agencies are open (which i work for one) but they were empty because we couldnt get to work yet we're required to take a personal day. and then he emphasized how "i told everyone to stay home, no one listened". that attitude was not what people needed.
btw...really sorry about your grandpa

not sure who you are referring to, but I place the blame on everyone.
and I am not making assumptions about the ill equipped cars...I saw it, with my own eyes on my own brooklyn street.
I agree with you on many levels. but we all have our own perspectives. I am very sorry about your Grandfather. It must be next to impossible to do the procession he undoubtably deserved.
we experienced a death in our extended family on Christmas day and it has been a logicastically nightmare as well. my heart goes out to you. and I agree with your 100 percent about the politics. we are being ruined by the fights between egos.

I would say don't blame bloomberg, but all he did was go on and on about how many plws are out.
we were plowed twice, and we were one of the lucky ones.
there was no reason for that baby to die. and I think if it was any one of us on LIF, there would be outrage.

I don't think you can blame the city. There just isn't enough manpower to clear so much snow. It's really unfortunate that the city picks and chooses which streets to plow.
But what doesn't add up is, this is NOT the worst storm we've had in decades or anything. I just googled-- in late February of 2010 Central Park got 21" of snow during a single storm (I remember that one because I was sick and made DH go out and get me cough syrup, lol). So that was certainly comparable to the 20 or so inches that Central Park received this week, right? I don't remember unplowed streets being as much of a problem during/after that storm. Clearly there was a difference in resources being deployed.
I agree that I don't remember snow not being plowed being such an issue in the past. I believe budgets were cut. Also, since it was a holiday week, I'm assuming less workers were available?
It's really unfortunate that some people are not yet plowed but it only makes sense that major areas get plowed first.
We live in a major intersection in Manhattan close to the hospitals. Our streets were cleared on Monday. Major bus routes and ambulances pass by us.
If we lived in a small residential area, I wouldn't expect to be plowed first. This goes for outer boroughs as well as Manhattan. Our friends downtown and Harlem did not get plowed.

I work in a teaching hospital in Brooklyn, across the street from another major hospital in Brooklyn and those streets were'nt plowed the buses were not running near those hospitals as well when I got to work they were begging us to call 311. So ofcourse I did not expect the residential neighborhoods to be plowed first but they did not even do areas with hospitals either in Brooklyn.

Re: I was disgusted with the way the mayor handled the blizzard, but this........
There is plenty of blame to go around - and I don't think the Mayor gets all of it. Although I do think the mayor should read waterspout's posts.
I think it's a culmination of the city budget cuts, not being preparedf or this storm ahead of time & yes, the mother of the baby. She went out in the storm, pregnant, in labor & alone.
We knew about this storm in advance. We were all prepared that Sunday we were going to get hit & hit hard. There is no reason - except for the budget - that workers weren't called in & plowing all night.
When I woke up on Monday in Suffolk, the main roads were in pretty good condition & I don't live near a hospital. Those plows were running all night.
This was an avoidable tragedy.

Ultimately, Bloomberg is responsible since he is the mayor, however not all of the blame can be dropped on him for this fiasco either. I lived in NYC for a couple very large snowstorms during the Bloomberg administration, and the NYC blackout. Everything was handled pretty well on those occassions, and at that point, Bloomberg was a new mayor, so I think the man is capable.
But he is saddled with a budget that doesn't meet the needs of the city. Civil servants who were probably trying to make a point. Unfortunately, people suffered as a result.
This is what happens when govt. does not have the funds to provide basic services plain and simple.

Re: I was disgusted with the way the mayor handled the blizzard, but this........
The mayor is ACCOUNTABLE for the city's actions. Whether it was a combination of events that led to the tragedy, at the end of the day, he is responsible. It started snowing at 12pm on December 26th...I didn't see ONE truck until yesterday afternoon! These trucks should have had routes established by 6pm on the 26th!!!!!!!!! This is a huge city, with soooo many people. Anything extraordinary happens here and it is a complete disaster and it costs people's lives! I'm sorry but the whole administration is to blame! They are NEVER prepared, ever! What happened in this case was a snowball event, BUT, if the city was prepared, which it never is (see a problem here?) I doubt that so many tragedies would have happened.
My husband was out plowing with my BIL's company and he saw so many people in flipped cars on the LIE its ridiculous! Me and my SIL were crying on the phone worried to death that they weren't going to make it home. There was not ONE plow on the LIE or the BQE...there is definitely something wrong with this picture.
There are going to be lawsuits up the @ss for this city's f$&k up!

Ditto. I also tend to think this is why he made Times Square a priority (assuming that is in fact the truth)... it's not like the money made there is lining his own pockets but big events like NYE do help the city dig out of some of its debt which will hopefully move us closer to avoiding problems such as these going forward.
My heart does break for the girl who lost her baby but I just dont think the blame rests squarely on the mayor's shoulders.

What I don't get it is this happens EVERY single year. Snow storms are NOT a surprise to NY's and yet EVERY year we go thru the SAME thing. Emergency response times, the gov't not protecting us enough with natural disasters, emergency plans, OT for city Why didn't he declare a state of emergency (with or without cars you are the mayor you can call it) We need a plan for SNOW. Then we need a back up plan. Then we need an emergency back up plan. Someone needs to be responsible. If we do not have $ for the most basic of needs. Then someone needs to start examining official’s expenses.(their security teams, the private cars, expense accounts, outrageous spending, etc)
This is a disgrace and unacceptable.

Actually- that's true. The governor is the only one who can declare a "State" of emergency. Just like President Bush couldn't declare Katrina an emergency, the Governor of LA had to. HOWEVER- he can declare a SNOW emergency which would force people to move their cars to make it easier for the plow trucks to go through etc..
I feel terrible for the poor baby! It's just awful! Regardless if she was trying to conceal the pregnancy from her family and give the baby up, she cared enough to bring the baby to full term! Break down and ask for help! When you call 911- it's a priority!!!!
The Mayor- if he's such a money managing genius, he needs to start doing his job! A PP poster said, look at the security detail, look at expenses, salaries, raises. There is a reason we got to be this way in the first place... greed? Regardless, in times of need, you pull your resources and pay people OT if you have to!
My DH is a gov. employee and it was making me SICK!! He was on TV saying stay home.... MTA was saying it's not safe, the LIRR wasn't running, but gov't offices were open so all the employees had to use their own time!!!! What sense do you make?
I don't remember the previous storms being handled this bad? Granted, they weren't the day after Christmas, but it's not as if we weren't warned. It's really disgusting!

Re: I was disgusted with the way the mayor handled the blizzard, but this........
I'm not blaming the city for the death of a baby but I will say this much, Bloomberg is an arse for how he has handled this. He decided to lay off sanitation workers and now he's saying we're doing the best we can with the resources we have. Well maybe you should have thought of that before you laid off hundreds of workers that help during crisis situations like a blizzard. ANd all that idiot keeps saying is this is like no other storm we've seen. Is he kidding me with that? This blizzard was not horrible. He makes it sound like we got 4 feet of snow. I understand we got a lot of snow but come on, like no other storm we've ever seen? How come the streets on long island are clear? How come the streets near the tree in the city are clean? Is it because it's a big tourist area and you need people to get there Bloomberg? Meanwhile people are stuck in the homes and can't get to work and a lot of these people are paid hourly and missing out on paychecks. What an idiot.

Honestly, the whole story baffles me somewhat. Why was she in the lobby? Was the building closed? Was it a business or residential? How far along was she as the article implies that she may not have been having regular doctor visits?
I don't think the death can be laid at the feet of the government. I don't think Mayor Bloomberg did a great job but I don't know why yet so it's hard to form an opinion quite yet.
who gives a shiit why she was where she was! she needed help and didn't get it. it's absolutely revolting to me - and look what the result was. this day and age we shouldn't be hearing about things like this happening.
