I was reading the "whats baby doing post"..? about talking

I was noticing that most of the children have words, and quite a few. My DS says mama and DADA, not directed at us necessarily, but nothing else. He babbles a LOTTTT. even in his sleep, HAHA. he is almost a year, is he behind? I didn't think so until I read that thread, should he be doing more? I guess neurologist will tell me during visit in Oct. but I was just curious when is the average time for the kiddos to be saying words??

What I have heard is that you don't have to be concerned until 18-24 months. But I am no expert.

They just start talking more and more, don't stress about itChat Icon Chat Icon

Re: I was reading the "whats baby doing post"..? about talking

My DS turned 1 year a week ago and he does not have any words yet either. At his 1 year ped visit, our doctor was not at all concerned.

For now, I think that since he started walking and doing other physical things early, he is not in any rush to start talking! I am not going to worry about it right now!

Re: I was reading the "whats baby doing post"..? about talking

My son is 15 months and says nothing...not even mama and dada. Sometimes he will say mama to me, but then he says it just to bable too.

The Dr said today, he is definitly behind , but not to worry till 18 months. He would reccomend Early intervention at 18 months if he didnt start having a lot more words.

I dont worry b/c he understands everything we say.

My main concern is that when I was PG they thought he might have a throat defect and I want to rule that out at 18 months to see if that is the cause.

Your Ped will tell you what to expect.

Our Ped said at 12 months, 5 words was average I think.

Re: I was reading the "whats baby doing post"..? about talking

We just had our one year ped visit and I asked the ped this q - mostly b/c of reading on these boards it had me worried that DS was behind. The ped seemed actually to be impressed that he had any real words at all and said not until 15-18 mos would he really be concerned about this anyway. He said at this age there is a HUGE range of what a particular baby will be doing both physically and verbally etc.

Also, I think a lot of this is in interpretation - I know for me - b/f I actually consider DS to really be saying a word I have to be positive he is using it for the correct purpose all the time. I think sometimes people refer to "words" more loosely.

That said, DS says and uses "Ma Ma" correctly - he also says Da-Da and uses it correctly but, sometimes the word is included in his babbles too so I am on the fence about whether to consider this a word. Also - he says AH-P - i.e. up correctly BUT, he only uses it sporadically so I don't count this as a real word yet. He also calls dogs "boing" Chat Icon but sometimes will refer to other animals with the same word. He says hi but im not sure he knows what it means. He will try to repeat many words as well but, I def. don't consider this words. In short, the only word I can say for sure he knows is ma-ma - Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

At that age I really would not worry about speech too much. I think the rule is that they should have at least a clear "mama, dada" by 16 months.

Re: I was reading the "whats baby doing post"..? about talking

I can't wait for real talking to come out of Josh and he's 20 months. Reading the other post about Grace asking for her dad to put her to bed is shocking to me.
(Christine, that is great!

His dr was fine with the 20 plus words he was saying at his 18 month appt...so I am okay with that evalution until he is 24 mos.

All babies are different...some walk early, others talk early.

I think the most important thing to do is talk to ped. They know better then anyone...(especially more then my over bearing mother whose co-worker's granddaughter was speaking full sentences by his age)Chat Icon

Re: I was reading the "whats baby doing post"..? about talking

Janice, you made me laugh...thanks all, I am not too worried about him, all things at his own pace. I have also noticed, that as he is learinging so many new things, he will stop doing other things for a while...then it comes back again, so funny.

like blowing kisses, he did it all the time, now stopped

clapping hands, he did this very early, then stopped, but now its back again, must have replaced the kisses, HA! and pointing, he figured out how to do that.

Now if only I cold stop him from roaming all over the house 24/7....Chat Icon

My son didn't start talking until he was over two years old, he is a talking fool now!!!

eta, my son was walking at 10 months and a speech therapist we recently saw told me that there is a corrolation between early walkers and late talkers.

Re: I was reading the "whats baby doing post"..? about talking

I am with you - it's hard not to question when you read posts like that.

My son is going to be 15 months and his speech is very limited.

He says:
Dadadadadada
OOOH (for Moo)
OWWW (for Wow when pointing at something)
Shhhh

I think that's it. I don't even think half of those are considered words. When I had his 12 month appt (Jack was saying nothing) my ped said that if he wasn't talking by 15 months we would call EI. I'll see in two weeks what he says.

I try not to but, I just feel bad when I see that other people are posting that their kids say so much. Also - it's upsetting because he is sooo frustrated bc he wants to talk. Chat Icon

I feel the same way. I try not to worry. DS does not say much "real" words.

He does not even walk yet. I know he is SUPER cautious.

I wonder is their is a correlation b/t the opposite too as my DS is 14.5 months and is an early talker (says atleast 30 words/phases and repeats a ton) but hasn't started to walk yet (he cruises, stands on his own, etc but doesn't take the steps without holding on to something).

to the OP- I think in general kids develop at their own pace and definitely try to not to compare your DC to other children (i know its hear) as it will drive you nutsChat Icon your DS sounds like he is right on track

i'm a speech therapist. i would say hes doing ok Chat Icon boys tend to be a little bit slower with talking, especially if hes an only child or youngest child.
you should see a big word explosion in the next 6 months or so.
in the meantime, just create opportunities for him to use words. if you're pushing him on the swing and hes enjoying it... just stop all the sudden. when he starts moving around and gesturing for you to keep going, you can say "more??" and give him a chance to repeat you. you can do the same thing with a food or snack he likes. but only give him a few bites. when he starts acting like he wants more, you can say "more?" and give him a chance to repeat you. same thing with the word "help". if he has a toy that talks or something... instead of just handed it to him, you can give it to him, but leave it turned off. when he starts to get frustrated and hands it back to you, you can say "help?"... and thats modeling the word "help" for him, and giving him a chance to use the word.
its basically giving him a chance to use words rather than just automatically meeting his needs, etc.
you can also start by getting him to repeat animal sounds, or "environmental" sounds ( beep-beep, uh-oh, choo-choo). when he starts immitating sounds, then he'll move on to immitating whole words Chat Icon
good luck!!! i think hes doing fine right now, though!

I think that sounds fine for around 1 year old. A lot of those babies on the thread were 18 months old and older. But having at least two words by 1 year is fine. Chat Icon

Thanks Janice- She is pretty advanced when it comes to speech. But she still walks into walls and falls all the time, so I would say her motor skills are a bit behindChat Icon

Caden had a word explosion at 12 months...

He'd said other words before but nothing that I was really sure of...he always left me wondering if he was really talking or not...with all my girls it was definite that they were talking.

Now at not quite 13 months he definitely has a ton...

They can go from having none at all to a bunch so I wouldnt worry at all..

My son didn't say a single word at 18 months-- not even mama or dada. His babbling was limited too. He didn't qualify for EI (yeah, no words at 18 months is "normal", ok...) Chat Icon but I bit the bullet and started taking him to private speech therapy. Going there, and learning the things I could do at home to work on this, MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE.

One year later now, he just turned 2 1/2 and talks up a storm. Full sentences, very appropriate, very social, etc. He still has problems with articulation so we continue speech therapy, though less often now.

But please know, that with time and effort, things can turn out just fine in the end!!
