I have to be honest, I think the whole"using abortion as BC" is the exception not the rule. I would think that after going through it once, most women go to great pains to never have to repeat the decision.

I agree for the most part I don't think many women use it for BC, but for the few that do, I just can't for the life of me understand why.

You're right, I would think if you go through it once you do EVERYTHING humanly possible to NEVER let that happen again.

I only know one person who has had two but she has gotten pregnant six times in her life - and still says that her dream in life is to have a *planned* pregnancy.

She swears that she was on the pill for all of them. I am not sure she really understands how women get pregnant.

If that's the case then why wouldn't she use an additional method - how frustrating!

Wow I can't believe how many people have had an abortion. I voted neither, luckily I've never been in that situation although I do know of a few people who have had abortions. I know of one person who has had several. Chat Icon

I think this is a great idea for an anonymous poll, I think it may be eye opening to some posters.

It definitely was for me!

I find this poll interesting, but not surprising.

I used to do clinic defense, and woudl escort women into abortion clinics in Brookline, after the Brookline shootings. First off, every woman who goes in there is told that an abortion could affect their ability to have a healthy pregnancy and delivery in the future. So many women who DO want to have children in the future, have to consider that.

Also, my old gyn shocked me when she told me how many grown women she treats have no clue about how women get pregnant. Many of her patients went to private religious schools and live with their parents who don't allow them to use birth control, don't teach it at home and send them to schools that teach abstience only. In fact, she was surprised when I told her I live with my boyfriend (DH) and my mom insists I go on BC!

wow, that's very interesting about your background. I also agree that many women don't know how it works!

On another note, abortions for the most part do not inhibit the chance of another healthy pregnancy down the road. I haven't found a doctor that would agree with that unless for some reason there were complications. Always a possibility, but for the vast majority-no.

Do you know exactly what she meant by it: do they not realize that a woman needs to have intercourse with a men ejaculating inside of her or do they just not know about the cycle and fertile time etc...

I voted....but i have to say -- not surprised at all in the results. i remember reading one time that a study showed a number as high as 1 out of every 3 women will have one in their lifetime.

I fall into the neither category... but I wish there were an option for women who had an unplanned pregnancy and kept the child...

But I don't think that was the focus of the poll.

I think the OP wanted to know if you either had an abortion or put the child up for adoption.

Keeping the child was part of the equation (and NOT because it isn't an option) but because she was not looking for that info.

I think that that statistic is probably true.

Most don't talk about it for obvious reasons.

So far according to the poll results its about 1 in every 2.5 people voting.

I'm not surprised by the #'s.

My sisters are both in college and they both have friends who have had abortions..one girl in particular had 3. My sister is no longer friends with her because like she said, at this point its birth control and my sister has zero tolerance for the behavior. She is a nice girl who is very very naive and has very low self esteem....It's a sad situation all around.

That poor girl... it's too bad your sister couldn't have helped her to see how dangerous her behavior is.

If her self esteem is that low, I'm sure losing a friend didn't help her.

I can't imagine using abortion as a method of BC.

My sister was there for her through everything but you come to a point where you can't support someone who won't stop their behavior. Not taking your pill for 4 or 5 days straight is irresponsible. Although the last time it happened her friend claimed she was taking it everyday..which very well may be the truth, but there is more to the story....

My sister is pro-life like myself and always supported her friend although it went against her beliefs. However my sister can't bear it anymore...it's past the point of irresponsiblity, its become birth control and I don't blame my sister for not being able to be there anymore! Every time it has happened my sister seems to be the one more affected by it..it depresses her so much, while the friend rebounds quite quickly. I know it's prob a matter of not being able to cope but it's still very sad

Re: I was thinking about the recent abortion debates...an anonymous poll...

Voted. I've never had one but I know someone who has and it was one of the most traumatic things I've ever helped someone get through.

I also have a question if anyone knows the answer...I had a D&C for a miscarriage 2 months ago and I understand it is the same process for an abortion.

My body is just not right yet, I've gained weight and it won't go away no matter what I do, I'm breaking out and I never have before, is it the same after effects after an abortion?

Oh I have no doubt your sister was there for her, I'm just saying obviously this girl needs serious help. More than your sister can give. It's just too bad she couldn't have gotten through to her.

As I said before, I've been through an abortion, I can't even imagine going through that more than once. It took a LONG time for me to reconcile the entire event - including the events that led up to the abortion. How this girl is just bouncing back is beyond my comprehension.

I'm sure she's just surpressing it. Unfortunately, at some point it's going to come back to haunt her.

And that's fine. I'm just saying I would like to see how that option would pan out if included. Obviously that wasn't the OP's point or she'd have included that.

I guess I just wanted to see how common it was. We have been talking about it so much, and almost everyone has such a strong opinion about it, so I was wondering how many people had had abortions and also, since so many people advocated adoption as an alternative, how often that happened amoung the same sampling of people.

For me, no. It took a week or so for my body to feel "normal" again, but I think that was more of an emotional state than physicical.

It could be your body still reacting to everything or coincidence.

I would talk to your doctor to be sure.

Right, so your point is kinda moot. If you want to see how that would affect the poll you should post a different one.

I'd be curious to see how it works out.

Thanks! They told me it will take up to 6 months to get back to normal so I am giving it one more cycle before I ask them again.

I was just curious regarding abortion because I imagine it's similar in that the pregnancy abruptly ends.

I was voicing a thought I had when I saw the poll, and that thought is related to the general discussion. If you find my comment so irrelevant, then ignore it. I have no desire to start another poll, as I feel it would take away from this one and neither would wind up being a fair representation of the LIF community.
