Ice cream/soft serve

Hey ladies. One of my co-workers told me that her daughter who is preggers saw something on the news the other day that it's dangerous for pregnant women to eat ice cream, especially soft-serve. Do you think there is any truth in this?

Re: Ice cream/soft serve

Glad I am not the only one who thought this was a bit ridiculous.

I guess if they don't clean the machines, or if it's frozen yogurt with artificial sweetners......yeah it can't be that healthy, but everyone on here posts about their ice cream dream foods...........I can't imagine it being that bad for you.....besides, everything in moderation right? ;)

Re: Ice cream/soft serve

The concern with soft serve ice cream is bacteria from the machines not being cleaned thoroughly enough. It's another, in moderation thing, if you ask me. Trust me, I eat my fair share of ice cream!

Re: Ice cream/soft serve

I LOVE ice cream, especially soft serve. But after hearing about the listeria risk with soft-serve, I did some research. Like cold cuts, the risk is small, but undeniably sometimes present. Listeria is nasty stuff, and can pass through the placenta. You could be exposed to it, be fine, and still pass it to your baby, which can cause, among other things, late-term miscarriage.
In fact, in other Western countries, women are warned a lot more strongly against soft-serve during pregnancy. I have preggo friends in Australia and England who were handed loads of literature from their OB's cautioning against soft-serve.
Yes, the machine hygiene is the only issue posing the risk: but let's face it, most of the places serving soft-serve are run by young people and sometimes people from other countries who may not have the same standards we do. (That sounds terrible, but it is not meant to be at all!) An undercover study last summer in Boston found that nearly all the soft-serve tested there had listeria present at dangerous levels (sometimes even triple the 'safe' limit).

So... that is more than my two sense, but for me, as much as I love soft-serve, I will postpone it for a little, and stick with hard ice cream, gelato, or homemade. Think I am gonn have some now in fact!

i have heard about soft server, listeria, or whatever that bacteria is... those soft serve machines tent to breed bacteria... a co-worker told me about it and told me i am not allowed to have frostys anymore!

i didnt read it for myself, but i will be avoiding it.. regular icecream wasnt included in the warning my co-worke read... so maybe there is something new out there?

I've heard we are supposed to avoid soft serve. I learned about it from one of my pregnant friends a few years ago. She said she couldn't have any soft serve frozen yogurt (I assume it's the same for soft serve ice cream) because bacteria can grow in the machines. I'm sure the risk is small, but I've avoided it and only had the hard kind. And I've really really been craving some soft serve in a cone Chat Icon

Re: Ice cream/soft serve

Um Baskin Robbins was giving free soft serves to PG women a couple of months ago.

I can't deal.

I think a dirty doorknob poses more of a threat to our health than ice cream does.

when i was pregnant with my DS i frequented carvel for softserve and subway for a tuna hero with pickles and vinegar so often they both bought me baby gifts!!!!!!!

that being said, i will never eat soft serve again while pregnant because of the listeria thing, i may not buy into it, BUT i wont take a chance i have pretty bad luck...lol

I do think there is truth in this for sure. Probably not likely but def possible. Makes sense, soft cheese can be an issue, so soft ice cream, makes sense to me based on the temps being lower to keep it soft.
