If a doctor's office calls you to come in... *update*
...is it always a bad sign???
I had an MRI of my lower back done on Thursday. As a result of our car accident, I have had some numbness in my left foot (it comes and goes where I can't feel the bottom of it).
My doctor's office just called and wants me to come in to discuss the results of the MRI. If there was nothing to discuss, they would have just told me that everythng was fine over the phone just now, right?
I'm freaking out about this a little....
*** So I went in last night. Turns out I have 2 herniated/bulging discs in my lower back. He wants me to start PT 3x per week for 6 (or maybe it was 8) weeks. I don't know how I'm going to find the time to do that!
Thanks for calming me down everyone!

It's not always a bad sign. For legal reasons, they usually can't leave too much detail on answering machines, and often just don't like discussing things over the phone. Even if it's just "We don't see anything major, but it looks like this may keep reoccurring". Also, he may want to discuss physical therapy, or drug treatments. Again, not necessarily a bad thing, just something that is better discussed with in person.

Re: If a doctor's office calls you to come in...
the worst possible thing that can happen is if while you were at the MRI place - they would've said - you cannot leave until we talk to your doctor.
That happened to me once and i almost passed out (i've had so many x rays and mri's it's not funny) - but this was the first one like, you're not leaving.
They put me on the phone with my doc who told me to come in the next morning because I had a pinched nerve, compressing my spine....so if it were TRULY terrible news - they would've told you AT the mri place....

Re: If a doctor's office calls you to come in...
I've had multiple MRIs - I've ALWAYS had a doctor's appointment afterwards to discuss the results, whether they were good or bad. I rarely got much info over the phone.
I hope it's nothing serious.

Re: If a doctor's office calls you to come in...
Thanks guys - I've never had an MRI before - TONS of CT scans and usually with those my doc just gets on the phone and says that everything was fine, or I don't hear back from them at all and whatever the findings were are discussed in a follow-up visit. I have a follow up scheduled for January 5th, but I guess they want me in sooner. I have an appointment for this evening at 5:00.
I guess MRI's are different? I was just freaking because they called me and told me specifically that they wanted me to come in.
I'm sure everthing is fine (at least, that's what I keep telling myself! )

Aww, it could just be that doctor's policy -- or perhaps they know exactly what it is and want to start you with some physical therapy or something right away.
I know it's easier said than done, but try not to worry too much!!

It's not necessarily bad, try not to worry too much. Many times they want you to come in to discuss the results and the next steps in order to get you on your way to feeling better. It's easier for them to do this when you are in the office so it can be a real discussion.
Good luck and feel better!

The PT will be a HUGE help. I have severe lower back problems and PT helps tremendously. I know it's a pain to make the time, but it will be worth it in the end.
I hope you're on the mend ASAP!
