and one a young man of similar age, and they asked you to donate up to 3 dollars for some sporting equipment/uniform, would you do it?

cheerleader is wearing uniform from the SD in your area, and you don't know if these are neighbor's kids or not.

I usually don't. I would only make a donation if someone I knew that went to the school was looking for donations. I would feel it was more legit.

However, $2 or $3 is not going to break my bank so maybe I would give a small amount , even if I wasn't sure where the money was going.

I guess it would depend on my mood that day.

I would simply strike up a friendly conversation and ask where they lived. I do this with kids who come to my door and its usually legit...

Well first, I never have cash.
Second, I would need some real proof they went to the school and like a written letter from the school saying xyz. If not, not flow for you.

Believe it or not, that's how kids are getting money for drugs lately.

Saw it on dateline or 20/20 last week.

Oh man, I hope not..

they came to the door and DH and I said no...then I felt badly and saw them walk away. And we are new to the neighborhood, so I wasn't sure if one of them was our neighbor's kids...and my husband said, well, we can give them a buck. So we called them back and did.

It's so hard to walk a line of trying to not be an azzhole and also trying to do the right thing. Ugh.

No way. Even if it's a small amount, like $2 or $3. Well, they get that from several houses and they are on their way to bigger amounts. I have never given anyone at my door anything. I don't even answer most of the time.

NOPE! I don't trust anyone. We don't answer the door. The last time we opened the door was to this supposed "college student" who was running a definiite scam because I caught her in a lie about one of our neighbors.

Honestly, I would not have given them anything. Only because nowadays there is too much bad stuff going around. I would have asked them all the info and told them I would call the school in the morning to make a larger donation by check.

Did they have anything to show you to support their uniform/equipment story....any kind of pamphlet from the school? Or was it just them explaining everything verbally....because I honestly can not believe a school would allow their students to just walk the neighborhood asking for money.

You know, I am not sure. DH answered the door. I freaking hate feeling taken advantage of, but then again - I don't wanna be a scrooge, either. I hate questioning things these days.

I am going to call the school tomorrow and find out, just for the hell of it.

What a world we live in.

If they had literature from the school that looked legit I probably would. I work in a school in the area I live so I am fairly sure I would know if it was not legit (the paperwork from school).

Now hearing about the drug though maybe not Chat Icon

I would be more inclined to give them money if they said it was for guns and drugs. The schools already gets enough of our money for equipment.

I wouldn't. If they are looking for donations, they normally do a fundraiser of some sort like a raffle or car wash.

I wouldn't. I've coached public school teams and there is no way they are sending the kids door to door. They're not allowed to collect money themselves, it has to be done in school or through a parents organization. Most organizations in general don't do the door to door thing anymore, unfortunately it's just not safe.
