I wouldn't. I'm not that trusting, I would assume they are collecting the money for themselves.... I don't think it would be legit if they are going door to door like that.... just doesn't seem right. If they showed proof or seemed convinving, I'd tell them I'll donate to their school directly .... but not giving them cash at the door.

Re: If two teens approach your door, one dressed as a school cheerleader..

I would give a couple bucks. I don't have the time in my life to question absolutely every little thing and every single person's motive, and I would hope these kids are being truthful. It wouldn't cross my mind to question them.

I waste more than a couple dollars on crap every week, so if I gave a couple bucks to kids for some sporting equipment, I feel better.

i probably would have... but i live in a small community and i know the people that run the local sports teams...

if they werent local i probably would still give money

This is me, but I'm also a sucker about a lot of this stuff.

me too but i'd give them a check. if it's not legit then they won't be able to cash the check and use the money for drugs, alcohol, whatever else they wanted it for!

I wouldn't give them money, mostly because I never have cash on me.

The only kids I ever give money to are my neighbor's kids. They did little arts and crafts over the summer and went door to door on the block selling them. But I know all those kids and they are young- like 10-12.

no, high school athletes dont usually go door to door for donations. That is why they have car washes.
I would NEVER just hand out money.

I don't give any money to a person coming to my door. I ask them for literature & then if I decide to support them I'll send a check.

I didn't see 20/20 so I'm glad you posted this thread.

Not only do the kids go door to door begging, but they featured one boy that said he kept a list of which houses would give him money, and he'd go to those houses first every time he was "in a bind".

Begging @ gas stations, grocery stores, and laundromats seemed to be most common.

Re: If two teens approach your door, one dressed as a school cheerleader..

This goes for any door-knockers - I need proof. I need a pamphlet or form, and a receipt. If you can't give me a receipt for my tax deductible donation, I will ask for specific information about the charity, website, address, phone, and the name of the canvasser to give them credit when I send in my donation.

If you can't give me those details, I explain that I'm sorry but I can't take the risk of giving my money away without knowing where exactly it's going. Close and lock the door.

well, i called the school to find out if this was legit...they lady in the athletic office said the school always supplies them with the uniforms, but cheerleaders sometimes have fundraisers for their competitions, etc

she said she will find out from the coach and will get back to me.

she thanked me for calling about it, as she said it helps having community members stay on top of the schools, and vice versa
