Re: If Ultrascreen results came back normal
The way my doc explained it, by doing the AFP or quadscreen (which AFP is a part of) after normal ultrascreen results, it gives them a few more percentage points of accuracy in understanding if anything is going on. I opted to do it to get the full picture, and the quadscreen also looks at other things (neural tube defects like spina bifida) that the ultrascreen does not

I chose not to do it. I think it is a personal decision.

I actually just quickly spoke to the nurse, I'm seeing my doc on Tuesday, but the nurse recommended I do it to show a fuller picture, but wasn't sure what she meant by that...Thanks for the info, that was really helpful

Re: If Ultrascreen results came back normal
the ultrascreen does not provide spina bifida info, so my Dr. insisted that I take the AFP after the ultrascreen....

Re: If Ultrascreen results came back normal
I had it done about 3-4 weeks after my Ultra Screen. I just figured it would give me a better picture of how the baby is doing. I agree though with the above poster, it's a personal decision. For me, I have taken every test they offered me so far. I just feel better getting confirmation that everything is ok.

No test is really necessary but I did all of them.

Re: If Ultrascreen results came back normal
I chose to do both this time because of my age. When I was pregnant w/Hayley I didn't do either test.

I think that depends on the individual. After each one of my first trimester screenings, my results had me at a decreased risk for everything according to my age. The only definitive test I had was an amniocentesis. For me and my sanity, everything I had done was 100% necessary or there would be no way I personally could have enjoyed my pregnancy. Now I can.

Re: If Ultrascreen results came back normal
As Goldi said, it depends on the individual and all tests are optional. I had great results on the Ultrascreen and had the AFP for peace of mind, only to have the AFP come back with scary results.
You have to be ready for the results you may get with the AFP (which you will never be fully ready if bad).

Totally agree...with my first I had results I wasn't expecting because my doctor did not tell me about the risk of false positives, etc...everything turned out fine, but it was a very hard time for us.

My ultrascreen results were 1 in 10,000+, but I chose to do both. I totally think it's a personal choice.

Re: If Ultrascreen results came back normal
My doctor called me today and told me that the ultrascreen results came back very good and that they would do the 2nd portion of testing at my next appointment...I guess that's what they mean? No one ever mentioned the AFP test to me.

Yes, he probably means the AFP or quadscreen. (the quadscreen is the AFP with a couple of additional components)

Did you have the finger prick portion of the test already? The second portion of the testing is probably the AFP test, which is done at about 16 weeks.
