But no, I do not root for it during the season...anyway, they're already in the playoffs. During the season, I couldn't care any less about what the Yankees are doing!!!
However, I actively (in my head, not out loud...my DH is an insane, and I mean insane Yankee fan) root against them in the playoffs.
I do not believe you can be a fan of both, IMO.

I'm a Yankee fan, but I also root for the Mets bc they're NY. Except of course during a Subway Series, but even then I prefer a good game rather than a shut out.
And it's different anyway, the Yankees haven't been holding first place since May...

I also want to add that a Mets collapse now would be catastrophic--a Yankee collapse would not be. The Mets were in 1st place ALLLLL year long.

I wouldn't gloat about it, but I wouldn't lose any sleep either. My DH would be as obnoxious as can be though.
I don't root for the Yankees ever - I come from a loooong line of self-confessed Yankees HATERS (my dad still roots for the Dodgers!). I won't go to that extreme myself, but I just don't have it in me to root for them. The only exception is if they play the Braves.

I'm a proud Yankee-hating Mets fan.  And I know plenty of the reverse and we all have good fun joking around with each other about it.
And for the "NY" fans that get offended by that, don't. It's all in good fun. I don't burn the Yankees in effigy or wish them bad fortune forever, but I LOVE sports rivalries. I think it makes it more fun - *for me* I went to UNC and I'm a GIANT college basketball fan. That means I'm a Duke-hating Carolina fan (or a State-hating Carolina fan depending on how you view it)... Does it mean I hope the Duke players get hurt or arrested or something? No. It means I like knowing Carolina is doing better than Duke, and I'd always root for the team Duke is playing against rather than Duke. It doesn't make me evil. I personally think it's fun.
I'm not a NY fan. I like specific teams (some of which aren't even in NY)... except I just can't choose between the Jets and the Giants. I apparently can go to the Jets / Giants game in a couple of weeks and I don't know who to root for!
So... I am being honest to say that if the Yankees make the playoffs or the world series, I won't be rooting for them. I won't be wishing them horrible fates, but you won't see me in pin stripes.
I understand where others are coming from being NY fans and that's totally fine... it's just not me!

i guess i should add my POV...
i am a die-hard yankee fan, but am in no way a mets hater. the ONLY reason i am laughing my a$$ off now is because of all my mets-fan friends who were soooo happy that the yankees started out so badly and struggled so much while the mets cruised in first place.
truth is, if the yankees get booted in the first round of the playoffs (why oh why couldn't they beat the !*$@#@& tigers???), and the mets make it to the world series, i will root for them to win - and be very, very happy if they do. especially since my grandfather is a huge mets fan!

Oh boy I feel old. My DAD was die-hard Brooklyn Dodgers fan and my mom grew up across the street from Ebbets Field. When they left NY, my dad had no choice but to be a Mets fan... so now he's a die hard Mets fan.
ETA - I also happen to just like the NL better than the AL...

no. as a met fan for years, i see how close we've come. i laughed last year when the yankees lost so maybe Karma is biting me in the butt.
so, no, i don't see the reason to laugh at them now.

I could not have said it better. I guess I get "jealous" that towards the end, the METS go down and the Yankees get better all the time.
I just can't cheer for the Yankees, I know it sounds harsh, but, I can't.

Since the Yankees ALREADY clinched a playoff spot...the same thing can't happen.
If the Mets don't start winning, they won't even make the playoffs. So sad.

Me either. I personally think that's a cop out. Just like I could never root for the Rangers since I'm an Islander fan.
I'm a die hard Mets fan - and my two favorite teams are the Mets and anyone who plays the Yankees. I will never root for the Yankees.
What makes it worse is that my husband is a Yankees fan. We spend lots of the season watching separate TV's.

You'll appreciate this. When the Mets didn't make the playoffs the year I was in HS, my dad would buy me the hat of the team the Yankees were playing -- for each series of the playoffs. And that was the hat I wore to school (kept it on my bookbag)... until the Yanks were out!
