That's horrible!
I can't decide what HIS definition of POS is in the customer's statement:
"when they intend to update their POS systems to support proper credits & exchanges with the use of gift receipts. "
POS = Point of Service
or
POS = Piece of Sh*t

I dont think that store is any different than any others. I thought a gift receipt was just to show that the item was bought at that store, not the price.

It's REALLY different than others. The purpose of the gift receipt is so that the receipient gets what the purchaser paid, not whatever they want to give them!

the original credit card has no weight in this conversation. gift receipt if returned/exchanged should be valued at the price the customer paid for it.
they are keeping the difference of money if an item goes on sale after it was purchased from the original customer. that is a scam... if you think about it, its the same thing as not having a receipt as they store will give you a credit for that the price its worth today.

Re: If you are buying a gift for someone from Dicks Sporting Goods
Keep reading the comments, the OP later states:
Their customer service management team informed me that their gift receipts indeed includes the price the buyer paid, albeit in a 'code' format that can be easily decoded with a basic decryption scheme or inputted into the register.
The problem is a) ****'s Customer Service email representatives were unaware, b) ****'s management within their stores are unaware, because c) ****'s training manuals do not include any details whatsoever on how to appropriately process gift returns.
I was floored when their Customer Service managers at their home office informed me of this situation. They sent me a $50 gift card (which I donated to charity) as compensation for raising this issue and sent me an official letter documenting the issues above and that they're using this as an opportunity to update their "training materials."
Via the phone, they informed me this situation had reached the highest levels of executive management within ****'s and this was not their intent -- "we are a reputable company and we in no way intended to defraud our customers."
So in the end, the OP's store and the people at email customer service were misinformed about the chain's return policy.

Re: If you are buying a gift for someone from Dicks Sporting Goods
FYI that's not my complaint. The issue was raised on another site so I was merely copying it. Apparently this happens a lot more than it should and other stores also.
ETA: I posted a while back about The Gap employees telling me that their policy was to only give the current selling price with a gift receipt OR a regular receipt. I questioned her several times and she insisted that you don't get back what you paid. Obviously that's not their policy, she was very misinformed, but buyer beware!

Re: If you are buying a gift for someone from Dicks Sporting Goods
Wow, I thought gift receipts were linked to the original receipts! And that you got the price that was paid! If your only getting the lowest price of the item, why give a gift receipt at all??

Re: If you are buying a gift for someone from Dicks Sporting Goods
The gift receipt is supposed to tell them what the giver paid. At that gap if you bring back a gift you get the original price paid. If you exchange sizes and the item is on sale they will give you credit for the difference.
