If you are from New York and relocated to another state, please read
Where did you relocate to? Are you happy where you are? Did you relocate with your family? If so, how is the school district? Are you in an area that is close enough to stores?
I am researching a relocation. I'm not sure yet where I want to go to and I'm trying to gather as much information and research to make the best decision for myself and my family.
I want to leave Long Island for numerous reasons. I've thought about Arizona, but I do love the beach. However, since hurricanes will become more prevalent on the East Coast, I don't think it's a good idea to be too close the water. I could move to an area that is still near the beaches, but not too close.
It's not a deciding factor though, I really just want to move where it's going to be best to raise children.
Thanks in advance.

My cousin lives in Morrisville, NC. It's near Raleigh. Beautiful area. Few hours from the beach.
A friend lives in Canton, GA. Very happy there.
Both families mentioned above have kids and love the school districts.

Re: If you are from New York and relocated to another state, please read
Where did you relocate to? -San Diego
Are you happy where you are? -ABSOLUTELY!!!
Did you relocate with your family? -When we first came, we did not have children. Had our first, moved back to NY and hated it, then moved BACK to San Diego.
If so, how is the school district? -I work in the school system. We have a HUGE school district. There are over 200 schools in our district. Obviously there are some schools that are "better" than others....
Are you in an area that is close enough to stores? -Definitely. I'm 5 minutes away from Trader Joes, Old Navy, B&N, Target, etc. And 15 minutes away from a huge Outlet mall, 2 other malls, airport, downtown, etc.
San Diego is AWESOME and I'd have tons of info to give you and recommendations if you want to move out here :)
We have 3 kids now and I couldn't think of a better place to raise my family. The kids were in shorts just last week! It's cold today, but last week my husband took the kids to the park. I love being able to get outdoors all year long!! Tons of farmer's markets. 15 minutes from SeaWorld and San Diego Zoo. 1.5ish hours from Disney/LegoLand. SO many beaches. Everywhere is kid-friendly and many dog-friendly places too.

I live in Phoenix AZ. I would never move back to LI. I moved away when I was 26 years old and into a house I bought and had built. I've since sold that home and am now liviing in a different house with my DH and DS. The house I have now I could never had imagined owning on LI. The way of life is wonderful. The weather is 9 months of wonderful for 3 months of rough. I won't lie that the summers are HOT but it's really not that bad. You don't have the humidity like LI. The school district that I am in is terrific. I made sure to move to an area that had a good distric for DS when he is ready to go. I am VERY close to all sorts of shopping. Nothing is too far away. I have everything I need. My parents and grandparents had moved out here years before me, so I have them here. But my extended family and friends are still all on LI. If I ever feel the need for snow, etc...just a short drive up north to Prescott or Sedona or Flagstaff. If I'm needing the beach...we head to San Diego for the weekend. It's great!

My DH and I lived in Tucson, AZ for 7 years and felt the same way! We ended up moving back to LI Sept 2011 (my DH had finished his PhD and after a year long search, finally found a job that just happened to be here), but if we could've, we probably would've stayed in Tucson long term. I do love being near my parents (especially since I'm adjusting to life as a FTM, DD was born 12/8!), but I do miss Tucson terribly.

Re: If you are from New York and relocated to another state, please read
It's still NY, but I am from the Hudson Valley, an area right on the border of NJ/PA and I frequently miss it terribly.
It's a great area to raise a family, and it's built up a lot over the years so that there is a lot to do and places to go (same kinds of shopping as LI), but you still have peace and quiet, stars, mountains and trees and green everywhere.
People are also different in a GOOD way. A lot friendlier and caring and less ME ME ME and not as quick to anger over little things.
I also think there's more of a mentality to work to live and not live to work like you see a lot down here.

We moved to northern Fairfield county in Connecticut last year and couldn't be happier. We're still close enough to NYC to enjoy it but far enough removed that the cost of living is much less.
Schools in CT are great, especially this area (Trumbull, Milford, Shelton, etc)
People are wonderful. I've made SO many friends up here and have only encountered a few people who've been snotty/nasty. Much friendlier and much less hostility.
We are close enough to the beach to enjoy it, we get passes for the town's beach or we can use one of the free state beaches, but we are actually far enough away that we didn't get flooded. Winters are still milder where we are because we're closer to the water, but more inland CT has more snow than LI does.

Where did you relocate to? Chesapeake VA Are you happy where you are? No not really for many different reasons.
Did you relocate with your family? No
Are you in an area that is close enough to stores? We have Target Wamart and 2 malls very close by. The mall I really like is about 30 mins away
We left for financial reasons along with the fact that my MIL was getting to a point where she needed help. She lived in FL but didnt want to move back to NY & we didnt want to move to FL. The plans didnt work out so she didnt move.
We have been here for 6 years and I am still not settled here.
