If you are given a check as a gift...

how long do you hold onto it before you cash it?? We try to cash it right away, or within a few days of receiving it.

I have a family member tha theld onto a check form us for 3 months, just cashed it yesterday.

We both forgot about it. I find this to be rude.

Thoughts?

Re: If you are given a check as a gift...

I usually cash them within a week of getting them. I did loose a check once from my aunt & later found it....I called her & told her though

There is a chance they misplaced it....

Re: If you are given a check as a gift...

We try to cash them within two weeks. I've had people wait months to cash a check and I always give them a call to see if they received the check. There has been a couple of times where the check has been lost in the mail.

Re: If you are given a check as a gift...

This reminds me of a story - my mom was invited to an OOS bar mitzvah and couldn't attend so sent a card and check and forgot about it. Months go by, my mom switches banks. SIX MONTHS after the party, the people now attempt to cash the check and it obviously can't go through because my mom no longer has an account there. The recipients had the nerve (IMO) to write my mom asking her to re-issue and cover the returned check charge as well!!!!Chat Icon I think they had quite the nerve being that they hung onto the check for 6 months!

I try to cash them quickly.

The one exception to this was when people who replied no to our wedding sent checks in the reply envelope. Some were over 2 months before the wedding and I didnt feel comfortable cashing them until after.

I do my best to cash checks within a day or two of receiving them.

I know in the past there have been a couple of times where life has just been so busy and a week or so has gone by but that's not the norm.

I do think it's annoying when people take forever to cash a check...it messes up our banking!!

I try to cash w/i a week or so. I DO try to get a thank you not out before it's cashed, but if it doesn't happen, I cash/deposit it anyway, because in my mind, having an uncashed check out there is as bad as not getting a thank you note.

I cash it right away.

Years ago my Dad gave my cousins a check for their DS Christening? My dad had a stroke several months later, I became his power of attorney, and after going over and over his checkbook realized A YEAR LATER my cousin never cashed the check.

I had to call and remind them. You would think, considering they have 8 kidsChat Icon , they would have cashed that check the second they got itChat Icon

Re: If you are given a check as a gift...

When we went to cash our wedding checks we realized that some folks post dated checks. We went 2 days after the wedding to deposit. Some of the checks were like a week post dated! And to make it even worse...once we could deposit it...it bounced!!!

I try to deposit ASAP because I hate if people hold my checks for long. And I've never post dated a check in my life!!!

as soon as I can get to the bank. I don't like when people hold them for a long time. I have started giving people AMEX GC b/c I hate waiting for a check to post.

turns out, this perosn has done it in the past. my sister told me she only gives then cash now b/c the same has happened to her.

I know that people leave busy lives, but 3 months is ridiculous.

We usually try to cash checks within a week or two. But we have had occassions where the recipients have taken 2 - 3 months to cash checks we have given. We stay on top of our checking account so we know how much is outstanding. It is annoying for my banking purposes

When my kids get checks I usually hold on to them for a little only because it is hard for me to get to the bank with 2 little ones. The one I use isn't local to us. I have gotten better though.
On the flip side, I hate when people hold onto my checksChat Icon .

Re: If you are given a check as a gift...

We usually go to the bank every other week. So the longest we would hold a check is 2 weeks.
