If you are under 35 and wanted the 12 week testing, did insurance cover it?

I just wrote about this in the quad screen post but wanted to ask here for more info.

I was going to actually have the 12 week sono just to see a glimpse of baby, but the office told me that because I'm under 35 insurance prob woudln't cover it and I'd be looking at about $400 out of pocket. We decided we'd just wait till the level II...

Really? What kind of insurance do you have?

I did all the testing, never had a lick of trouble from insurance. Give the insurance co a call - I have a feeling whoever told you that was just being super cautious, I'm sure it'll be covered.

ETA: I just did the math and I would have been 28 during the nucheal (sp?). No issues with the pregnancy or anything that would have warranted a special case either.

I have Empire and it was covered. I did have to pay slightly more than usual bloodwork because no participating labs offered the modified sequential screening, but it was like $40 for each part, for a total of $80 I think.

The sono was totally covered.

Mine was covered. But there are some tests along the way where I need to pay some co-insurance out of pocket, but it was not the full amount.

Yes. Believe it or not, I got a letter that they weren't going to pay for the 20 wk anatomy sono but I wrote a letter, as did my doctor and it got covered (as far as I know---haven't heard back from them and I've since given birth!)

I was never given the option NOT to take it and I was 25 at the time. My insurance covered it.

It is considered a standard test when pregnant - I have not heard of it not being covered unless maybe you have a not great insurance. It has nothing to do with being under 35 as a reason for the testing. Maybe your OB's office is not coding it properly?

My insurance considered it a 'specialist' appointment but it was covered less my $30 co-pay.

None of the doctors that I've seen here do that test? Chat Icon They said it's not a requirement or even offered by my OB or a couple of others in the area? Chat Icon Now I'm confused??? Chat Icon I was just always told that the doctors don't do that here? Strange....

Re: If you are under 35 and wanted the 12 week testing, did insurance cover it?

Weird...I have great insurance, I don't pay one dime for the whole pregnancy...when I had my son we didn't pay a thing and this time the same...

It was the assistant at the office who told me this....she was very matter of fact about how they woudln't cover it b/c I'm not over 35 and its not a necessary test....

I'm past the point of it anyway (14.5 weeks) and its not a huge deal, but I should have called my insurance to check. I am going to let my office know not to tell people false info like that...how annoying!!!

thanks ladies!
