If you called to have an EI Evaluation for your child...
I made the call to EI but I'm still not sure if they're going to do an evaluation. Can you tell me your experience with this, what made you call to get the evaluation?
My son does make sounds some ma and da but he's never really pointed to things or waved. Do some babies just not do these things? Do all babies wave and point?
Thanks for any advice/input!

Re: If you called to have an EI Evaluation for your child...
How old is he?
I called because DS was 2 and was not talking as much as he should have. He pointed at everything but didn't say much. Actually someone at work had told me about EI after she met DS. I didn't even know it existed and I didn't even realize DS may have a problem since everyone always said "boys talk later, he will start talking more when he is ready, etc." Worst advice EVER to give someone with a concern BTW.
Best call I ever made!
I'm pretty sure they have to evaluate him by law. After he is evaulated they would then tell you if he qualifies for any services.
Good luck

He's 15 1/2 months. Did they give your son services?

sorry to jump on but I am a speech pathologist. Nothing you said about your DS it too alarming but you def. should get a speech/full developmental eval. If they give him anything it can only help. My neighbors son was the same way and now 6 months later he talks a mile a minute. It may just not be his time yet or he might need a little help. EI is better if the parent is involved. It is about teaching the parent strategies to help facilitate langauge. If you have any questions feel free to FM me. Good Luck. !!!!

Yes. He received OT, PT and Speech and also attended an EI preschool from age 3-5. He had a lot of fine and gross motor delays as well as cognitive delays. He is 8 now and still receives OT at school.

Re: If you called to have an EI Evaluation for your child...
We just started this process and are in the middle of our evaluation. Our ped sent in the request to EI because her motor skills are delayed. We and the therapists are assuming it's because she was adopted and had no human interaction until 2 months ago and will catch up quickly but better to be safe then sorry I say. EI has to evaluation you if you request it. Our case worker came last week and didn't think Sophia needed a full evaluation because she is babbling and is playing pretty well but she is definately behind in many milestones. We are having a "screening" for her with a educator and they'll evaluate her motor skills. If she needs help they'll set up some therapy sessions targeted just for her motor skills until she catchs up to her age group. The great thing about EI (I think anyway) is that even if she doesn't get approved now, we can call them back up until she is three years old and have her evaluated again if she is still slow in learning (and it's free). Everyone was very helpful and nice so far.
Good luck!

Even after age 3 it's still free and you can still get an eval., it just goes through your local school district rather than the State

Re: If you called to have an EI Evaluation for your child...
I got Andrew evaluated for speech when he turned 2 - mostly because our pedi insisted. The pedi was concerned because he did not have 50 words at 18 months, which if you ask me, is a lot, but whatever. He passed his evaluation with flying colors, and I learned a lot from it. I have the report and would be happy to share with you what I learned and what they said was normal.
Lauren is the same as Matteo, and after going through it with Andrew, I am not worried at all. She says Momma, Ball, woof-woof and does signing for more, milk and eat.
ETA: Andrew evaluated at 25 months. By 26 months, he was talking in full sentences. IT was like overnight his speech just exploded.

Lauren is more advanced I think. He doesn't know dog, or point to a dog in a book. I'd like to see the report from Andrew's evaluation, that would be great. Did he ever point /wave?
