There is a ridiculous amount of sugar in juice, natural or not. An apple doesn't have the same amount of sugar as a glass of apple juice, nor does it have the same nutritional value. They are happy drinking water and milk, why introduce something that is just empty calories?

Exactly! Same reasonings here too.

My daughter is almost 4 and drinks milk 2x/day and water the rest of the day. She LOVES water, and I love that she loves it Chat Icon She has no desire for juice, chocolate milk, soda, tea, etc. My youngest will not be offered those things either.

Just no reason for me to offer it, she's happy with water and eats a healty diet of fresh fruits/veggies.

Pretty much the same here. I have given her watered down juice a few times but she drinks her plain water just fine so I really don't see the need right now.

Honestly i don't have a reasoning behind it. If DS gets juice its sooo water down he prob cant even taste it.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Seriously if i give it to him. The whole cup is water except for 1 tablespoon of juice. To me at that point its useless, but Dh says it spices his water up.

I see it as liquid calories she doesn't need...bonus that she's not a fan of it anyway so it works out. Luckily she's a water fan. If she actually liked juice, I'd still limit it a lot. JMO though of course Chat Icon

Re: If you do not give juice,

DD LOVES her water...she is obsessed with it. She can gulp "awwwa" (agua) all day long...I feel like if I give her Juice...that will all come to an end and she will want juice all the time. I just feel like its empty calories and unnecessary at this time.

Re: If you do not give juice,

Sean gets both -

Sometimes he asks for water, sometimes he asks for juice, sometimes he asks for milk -

IMO moderation is key for anything and everything in a diet. I don't see the need to completely cut out anything.

I also am a neurotic freak about brushing his teeth though, since the second he GOT teeth - Chat Icon

I try not to give her juice but she may get it once a day, especially if it's prune or white grape juice for her digestive system.

Re: If you do not give juice,

We tried to not give DD#1 juice for a long time. I would rather her have milk and water.

When we give juice (maybe once a day/every other day) it's about 2oz juice and 6oz water.

The only time she gets straight juice is if we're out at a restaurant or a juice box at a party.

She's not a big drinker so I would rather her drink watered down juice than nothing at all.

Re: If you do not give juice,

I dont give it because of the empty calories and all the sugar. DS loves water and I am fine with just giving him just water.

Re: If you do not give juice,

DD hasn't had juice just b/c I don't buy it. We didn't keep juice in the house before she was born, so it's not something I just pick up when I'm food shopping.

I want to avoid the sugar in it, but I won't NEVER give it to her. If we are out and it's available, fine. But at home she is fine with water.

I'm also not a big juice/soda drinker. I drink mostly water b/c I hate wasting calories on a drink. I'd rather have ice cream than a glass of soda Chat Icon

DD drinks water and is fine with it so why bother introducing juice. I'm also afraid once she tries juice, she wont want the water anymore.

Re: If you do not give juice,

We don't give juice because I don't want Ds to drink his calories. He eats really well and gets all the nutrients he needs from milk. and food. No need for adding juice into the mix yet. that's what I say when I'm asked why.

Re: If you do not give juice,

I do not give juice for a couple reasons:

1. Obesity runs in my family (both sides)
2. Juice has little nutritional value

My DD's already have the cards stacked against them in the weight dept, so I decided to avoid juice. I'm not a nazi about it and I let DD try it if she wants, but she actually does not like it (at 3.5 years). She loves her milk and water.

Re: If you do not give juice,

The rare times Charlie has juice (orange or apple), I still cut it (she will be 3 in June). I'm just not a fan of all that sugar rolling around her teeth...and she's perfectly fine with water & milk. Nor do I feel the empty calories are necessary - she's on the smaller side so I'd rather she fill up on food than juice.

I never got why people push juice so much - it's a personal parenting choice. It's not like I'm depriving her of air or something Chat Icon

Re: If you do not give juice,

With DD#1 I wasn't in a rush to give juice - I just felt that she was eating regular fruit and she loved milk and would drink water so I didn't want to push it. Additionally DD didn't even like juice. She was also very active so I didn't want to give more sugar than she needed. Eventually she had lactose issues so I had to take her off milk. The ped suggested I give juice since she wasn't drinking milk.

I did give DD#2 juice - but when we are home - I give both girls 90% water and 10% apple juice when they have juice. When we go out and I can't easily do that I give motts for tots since it isn't straight juice.

Re: If you do not give juice,

Nothing really wrong with giving your DC some juice watered down or otherwise , but to me it's just sugar, empty calories... really no need for it IMO. DD never had juice when she was little, she drank just milk or water, I gave her juice for the first time (once or twice) when she was around 2.5 ,but I REALLY watered it down, and then we started giving it to her regularly when she was around 3 and started preK, but gets it 2 days a week when she is in school. I buy the vegetable&fruit juice.

Ditto-My MIL has bought them juice boxes and one of my sons won't even drink it. If your kid likes milk and water why offer juice? Empty calories, sugar, bad for their teeth etc etc.

I waited because I didn't want her to have empty calories - I didn't want her filling up on that stuff.

same here. Jacen drinks milk or water. He'll get Motts for Tots juice as a special treat every one in a while.

I just don't think it's necessary and i know he'd drink the whole thing and then not eat his meal.

Re: If you do not give juice,

Much to my displeasure, DD has juice (she is a terrible drinker and I am having a horrible time getting her to drink anything other than BM directly from me)

My reasoning was that as a poor gainer, she did not need to fill up on juice and refuse food. It is empty calories, can rot their teeth.

Once I can get DD drinking more regularly, I am hoping to decrease her juice intake drastically (she has about 6 ozs a day)

Re: If you do not give juice,

DD is a few days shy of 22 months.
At first I didnt give juice bc peds said not to, only formula and water.
Then when she turned 1- I didnt give it bc peds said its empty calories.
then @ 15 months I tired it and she wouldnt take it.
Tried at 18 months and just recently and she wont even sip it.

She drinks tons and tons of water and milk so dr said not even to give it a second thought.

I waited a long time. She JUST started getting watered down juice like once/day at almost 2.

I waited because I didn't want her to have empty calories - I didn't want her filling up on that stuff.

ditto...17 months and hasn't had it yet... I feel like if he is happy with water and milk, why add anything more.

Same here. He LOVES both water and milk, so I see no reason to introduce the extra sugar and empty calories. He is 15 months old and we have no plans to give him juice anytime in the near future.

Re: If you do not give juice,

I didnt introduce juice until after 18 months; no real reason why... my
son(s) liked the water; they were content with it- so I figured why bother...

Once I did introduce it they preferred water over juice, and I think thats great!

At 5 my older DS loves water, but of course loves juice too (especially orange juice!)

At almost 2- my younger will maybe have some very watered down juice 2-3x's an entire month.... he prefers the waterChat Icon but I know that will eventually change...Chat Icon

Re: If you do not give juice,

Personally, I haven't given DS juice yet b/c I can barely get him to take water right now. In the past couple of weeks, he has been taking it much easier, so thats good....but my thoughts are once he gets juice, he will not really like plain water.

I will eventually give him watered down juice, then eventually increase the amount of juice...but right now, I want to make sure he will drink water.
