If you had 4 nights in Italy only (winter time) ....
Where would you choose to spend those 4 nights?
Venice? Rome? Milan?

NOT MILAN! I spent 5 days in Milan. We only needed 1 day- 2 at the MOST. Unless you want to do a lot of shopping.
It's a toss up between Venice and Rome. I've been to both. Both are fantastic.
You could probably do 2 nights in Rome, then take the train up to Venice and spend the last 2 days there- if you feel like doing the travel in between.

Venice is definitely more romantic than Rome.

I have to add Florence... its amazing.
OF those three- I say Rome. There is a lot to see- so many churches and museums. The Vatican is a day by itself.
Venice you'll be bored after 2 -3 days. I have never been to Milan, but I heard its just a big city- good shopping, but nothing particularly Italian about it (no history, famous churches, art, etc...)

It is gorgeous there...truly stunning
I picked Rome just because of the amount of things you can do there
Venice can be seen in 2 1/2 days

Your husband is the MAN !!
I would pick Venice, hands down.. Rome a very close second though , but Venice is far more romantic
And I like Sue's idea of maybe going to Rome a couple days and taking a train to Venice... when I went with my girlfriends to Italy a bunch of years ago, that is what we did

Il Duomo is there in the center of the shopping area. There was also a castle that was being refurbished while I was there in June 2004

Be careful of Venice...I think they are in their flood season now....
I liked Venice, but it was super touristy and got sort of boring after a night or 2. Not that much nightlife there. Although it is romantic.
I know it wasn't in your choices, but after spending 3 weeks all over Italy, Florence and the sorrounding areas are hands down my most favorite, beautiful, romantic part of Italy.

Re: If you had 4 nights in Italy only (winter time) ....
Venice is a little rough in the Winter - at least in Rome, a lot of your sight-seeing is indoors. In Venice, travel is by foot, or by taxi boat ONLY!
And you run the risk of the flooding in Venice - Piazza San Marco is usually the first to flood out.

i believe flood season is mid-end of october
when we were there they were setting up the tables for people to walk on and that was Oct 3rd
ETA..i believ they are safe with Jan
BUT a lot of Venice is walking around outside and it will be colder in Jan
Rome there are much more inside things to do

I couldn't have said it better myself.
Lisa, I could have spent my LIFE in Florence. It's soooooooooo wonderful. I personally was not a fan of Venice at all. DH liked it best though so I'm sure it's a matter of personal preference. But of all the cities, I'd definitely do Florence.

Re: If you had 4 nights in Italy only (winter time) ....
I don't know, that's tough. I was in Venice in January and I thought it was absolutely breathtaking -some people have even told me it's probably better in the colder months b/c they said that in the warmer months it can be a bit smelly - but, it was FREEZING when I was there. I think it might have even been an unusually cold year -but that was a little much.
Rome is awesome, and like people have said, I think there is more to actually do in Rome - more places to see. But, Venice is near Padua which also has some beautiful things too (so I am told, I never made it there myself )
I was only in each place for a weekend and in Rome, I could have definately used a TON more time!

Well, as I said, it's a matter of personal preference
I found Venice to be very blah, boring and quite honestly, dirty. The water was gross, IMO. But for me, to see the birthplace of the Renaissance, that was just WOW.
Lisa - it really depends what it is that you're looking to do while you're there.
