If you had a c-section for the 1st baby what are your chances of not having one the 2nd time around??
Or is it once you have a c section then you will always have to have one??
Are there any drs that will try and let you go vaginally after a c-section....if so any recommendations in the suffolk area??

I know that a couple of people on here have had a vaginal birth after a c-section, so I know some doctors will do it.
I know I am going to have a c-section for the second one - it was already discussed with my doctor after I had DD and she really wants me to have one.

Re: If you had a c-section for the 1st baby what are your chances of not having one the 2nd time around??
I had a c-section 2 weeks ago. I was originally in the care of a midwife. But my pregnancy turned high risk so we had to consult with an OB. My OB did a double suture on my uterus which makes me eligible for a successful VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean).
Your best bet is to find a midwife to take on your case. They are the best at honoring VBACS. Although some OBs are open minded enough to deliver a VBAC as well.
Good luck!

Re: If you had a c-section for the 1st baby what are your chances of not having one the 2nd time around??
My OB said there would be no problem with VBAC if I were to have another child. Frankly, I wouldn't trust another OB to do a c-section, and the MD that performed the one I did have has retired. But since I'm over 40 it's all moot anyway. No second child for me.

Re: If you had a c-section for the 1st baby what are your chances of not having one the 2nd time around??
My OB said my C-section met the requirements of trying for a VBAC...but b/c my 1st pg turned high risk - and that my 2nd pg will now be of higher risk as well, he suggests I go for another C-section as it is in the best interest of me and the baby.
eta: I think some of it has to do with why you had a C-section the first time, how your uterus was cut (vertical vs. horizontal), etc

I will be trying for a VBAC with my 2nd. I have NO clue what's going to happen the 2nd time around. I may be faced with all the complications I did with DD, or I might not. We'll just have to see...but I'm definitely trying for it

I had a C/S for baby #1 and the doc won't "let" me do it for #2. I wanted to, but I also don't want to face the risks. If I felt that strongly against it, I would change docs, but I am just gearing up for C/S #2 at this point

My doc said I was a good candidate for trying to have a VB after CS, so you don't have to have one. I think it all depends ont he reason you had to have the CS in the first place, how it was performed and how you healed.

Some people can have a v-birth after a c-section. I can't but I wish I could

Some people elect to have a VBAC. I think you will need to find a dr. that supports it. But everyone is not eligible. I can't have a VBAC for #2.

Re: If you had a c-section for the 1st baby what are your chances of not having one the 2nd time around??
It depends on the reason for having the c-section in the first place. I will never be allowed to carry to term or to have a vaginal delivery. I'm just hoping that if I have another baby I can go a bit longer than last time. My baby was not really ready to come out but it was very risky to let me carry longer.

I will be a second c-section when I have #2 but I have read up on (b.c of my past job) and asked my dr about the criteria.
They take into account - these things and others as well: reason for c-section the first time (breech for example vs failure to descend) your weight how they stitched you up (double sutures etc) length of time between deliveries any other complications medical history how many prior csections size of baby where your incision was size of your pelvis Those are just some of the things they take into account.

I had a c-section b/c DS was breech. When my dr stitched me up, she joked and said "damn, I'm good, you'll definatley be able to go vaginally next time".
If there is a next time, I would prefer a vbac so long as there is no medical reason not to.

Re: If you had a c-section for the 1st baby what are your chances of not having one the 2nd time around??
I go for my counseling session next week with the OB Surgeon to discuss C-Section vs. VBAC for this pregnancy since I had a C for #1. I'd like to do VBAC and my midwife seems to think I can go that route, but I'm exploring all my options before deciding.

Re: If you had a c-section for the 1st baby what are your chances of not having one the 2nd time around??
I actually had a VBAC with my second child It was one of the best decisions I ever made. I had an OB who supported me 1000% and since all the right conditions were there, I succeeded. My first child was a c/s because, and ONLY because he was breech (people often think because of his size, but that was not the case). Baby #2 was born almost exactly 2 years after my first and c/s.
Others have mentioned it above, and I know I have responded before that all the right conditions must be there. Off the top of my head, mine were:
no labor and delivery issues the first time around;
2nd baby had to turn themselves (no version allowed);
baby #2 had to come on their own (no inducing);
I had to go into labor on my own before 41 weeks (my doc was letting me go 1 week late to try for the VBAC);
The second baby was monitored closely for size. OB said anything looking bigger than 8 lbs might be iffy.
It all worked in my favor, she came at 38 weeks and was 7 lbs and 11 oz after 3 hours of pushing!
ETA: My OB did tell me about the risks of uterine rupture being soooo small.... And really, the risks in a major surgery like a c/s can potentially carry greater risks than the vbac.

Re: If you had a c-section for the 1st baby what are your chances of not having one the 2nd time around??
I asked my doctor (OB - not a midwife) about this as they were wheeling me into the OR to do my first c/s. He said that it should not be a problem (assuming everything went okay and I healed well) to do a VBAC. And that's with inducing, he still said I may be able to do a VBAC.
However, as of now I plan on doing a planned c/s instead of trying a VBAC. I have medical issues that require me to be induced prior to my due dates (as well as my not being a midwife candidate) so I never want to put myself through waiting all day to end up in a c/s situation again - it caused me a lot of stress and disappointment. Planning it sounds a lot less stressful and less exhausting... but that's just my situation... not eveyone has to have inductions everytime either like I do.

I had to have a second c-section but it was because my labor never progressed with Damien and I am a diabetic so they wouldn't let me carry to 40 weeks anyway. I was perfectly fine with my 2 c-sections

Re: If you had a c-section for the 1st baby what are your chances of not having one the 2nd time around??
I had a scheduled c/s due to the large estimated size of DS. I would like to try to have a vaginal delivery when it comes time for #2, but as my OB said "There are no heroics in childbirth" He said this b/c even if they induced me, they might have to end up doing a c/s due to the baby's size.

My doctor said that he'd support me if I wanted a VBAC with number 2, provided that there was more than a year and a half between births. We'd like to have a 2nd child 3 or 4 years apart from DD, so hopefully we can do a VBAC.

It really depends on your reasons for having a c-section the first time around and on your Dr. It looks like I'm going to have another c-section this time around, but my Dr. didn't completely dismiss a VBAC, either.

If we have a 3rd, I would like to find somebody that supports VBACs. When I was pregnant with DD, I asked my doctor about a VBAC and he was dead set against it. I will most likely find a midwife should DH and I TTC again.

Had a c section with my son and will have one with my second child. My insides are so narrow that I would not be able to have a vbac.

Re: If you had a c-section for the 1st baby what are your chances of not having one the 2nd time around??
I had one with Julia at 38 weeks due to high BP, I asked my DR about a VBAC with baby #2 and he said no because there is such a high risk of uterine rupture, so I decided against it and went for the 2nd c-section which I had no problems with at all.

Re: If you had a c-section for the 1st baby what are your chances of not having one the 2nd time around??
I think it just really depends on many factors - why you had your first c/s, how comfortable your drs feel about a vbac, etc.
I was going for a vbac with baby #2 and in hindsight I wish I had just scheduled the c/s in the beginning. At each appt I spoke to all my drs about the vbac and they were all supportive, but none went into all the detail how DIFFICULT it can be to accomplish a vbac - sure it's possible, but many factors have to come into place for this to happen. (most drs won't let you go past your due date, etc)
So for me, it wasn't really going to happen after all, so I had a scheduled c/s.
