If you HATE ceiling fans too, please come in and talk me down off the ledge! (disclaimer: this is a ridiculous post)

Help!

DH REALLY wants a ceiling fan in our bedroom. I DESPISE the look of a ceiling fan. DESPISE isn't a strong enough word, really. I know some will say there are some nice options for ceiling fans nowadays, but trust me I've seen them all, and there is NO SUCH THING as a nice ceiling fan (in my eyes). I really want a small chandelier in our bedroom, it is the perfect touch for what I'm trying to create in and the thought of getting a ceiling fan really makes me want to cry.

All that being said, I hate the thought of not making my DH happy. He gives me full reign with the decorating decisions in the house and never makes any requests, but this is something he really wants. Grrrrrr, this of all things! I've explained to him that I just can't do it and suggested we compromise with a vintage inspired oscillating floor fan that we can use in the months between using air conditioner and heat. (Which brings me to my other issue, there are so few weeks where a fan is even needed—it's just that in between time where it's not hot enough for AC, but it's still a bit warm.) The rest of the time I would store it in the basement. He has agreed to this.

I just feel guilty. He works hard and doesn't always get enough sleep and I want him to be as comfortable as possible in his home.

I love home design and I can't help but see a ceiling fan as a big, fat, ugly NO NO! I put a lot of thought into EVERY decision I make for our home. I want it to be classic and beautiful and a ceiling fan feels all wrong for what I'm trying to create. (Like bringing a cheap hooker to a lavish gala affair!)

Yet, it's been a year since we moved in and we still have no lighting fixture in the bedroom, just a light bulb sticking out of our ceiling. I can't pull the trigger on a chandelier because I feel guilty about not getting DH the fan. But I can't pull the trigger on the damn fan either!

So, if you've made it this far, THANK YOU! The point of my post is I'm about to order a friggin ceiling fan. Ahhhh! I need a reality check (or a virtual slap!) from my anti-ceiling fan girls. For those of you who understand my feelings, please weigh in here (no offense to the pro-ceiling fan crew, but I already know what you're going to say). Did any of you cross over to the other side and live to tell about it?

Which fan would you order?

Honestly...I think you're over thinking this. It's a fan. Chat Icon
He gives you complete decorating control and is only asking for this.
I would just do it and live with it.

If you find you can't live with it...than address it again. But at least give it a shot.

I also dislike ceiling fans in bedrooms, but unfortunately, find them necessary. They now sell kits where you can have a chandelier attached to the bottom of the fan. As weird as it sounds, they do not look that terrible.

I have ceiling fans in all the new rooms I had built. If we had a chandelier in our bedroom when we bought the house, I would have torn it out immediately! I like chandeliers (I have one in the foyer, and am looking at ones for the stairwell and the dining room), but I definitely don't like the look of them in a bedroom.... don't do it.

get a chandelier you want.

here's why..... those damn ceiling fans get SO much dust on the top part where you can't even see it, and when you do and finally clean it - you will be disgusted...especially at the thought of the fan being on and circulating particles everywhere.

yes, dust is everywhere, sure, but over your bed? I don't know...and then to have to dust it, you'd have to move everything out of the way so the crap doesn't fall down on your furniture/bed...

get a chandelier and promise him lots of

Ceiling fans are not my favorite either but for a bedroom it is nice to have that breeze sometimes. My mil has them everywhere (kitchen and dining room!!) and this I would definitely not care for but a bedroom, If it was the one thing my husband wanted, I'd get the best one I can find.
Also, I don't know if this makes sense, but since you have a basement, when my Mil changes a fan/light she calls a handyman buddy to change it for 20 bucks, couldn't you have a pretty chandelier and the ceiling fan in the basement and switch it two times a year If the electric is there its easy to swap, no? unless your ceilings are ultra high or there's something I am missing when this swap happens at my in-laws.

good luck

I am so with you, I refused to put ceiling fans in any of my rooms. However my husband didnt care so it was ok. In your situation I think I might cave. I would go with the first choice, plus I think the floor fan would take up alot of room.

I had no idea ceiling fans were so hated.. I don't love them, but the function wins in my book. Floor fans are so loud and annoying (at least mine are).

I'd let him win and get one since he hasn't asked for anything else design-wise. There are nice enough ones out there

I vote chandelier + floor fan. I hate them in bedrooms (dust over head, no thanks!!) and they are so rarely used.. A greatquality floor fan with a remote might suit hubby just fine!!! It's very cute you're debating it though Chat Icon

I hate them too but never got around to changing the one in our bedroom to a chandelier. Well, I have to tell you our central air broke on one of the hottest nights ever and I was SO THANKFUL that we had that fan. Now I will never take it down, ugly as it is, because I would rather deal with that than have to suffer if our central air breaks again!

I have a love-hate relationship with them.

I think they can look wonderful in some homes. That being said, I didn't really want one in our master, but I do like the function (we use it all year round), plus our ceiling isn't high enough for a chandelier. My compromise was crystal sconces and a more decorative fan.

i think a floor fan would be annoying... it was alwasy in the way in our bedroom since it not that huge. we got white ceiling fans so they kind of blend in to the ceiling, so you really don't notice them... but i think they are more practical!

Don't go by me...I have them in all our rooms and there is nothing better than going to sleep with the fan on low just moving the air around.
Did you go to a lighting store and not a big box store? They can customize them for you - we got crackled finish one ours. Costs more $ but worth it.
