If you have a caregiver in your home (re: meals)

Do you dictate a specific meal menu or do you generally leave it up to the caregiver's discretion? And how old is your child?

I dictate everything. lol. DD (6.5 months) isn't eating a solid lunch yet so I just leave 2 bottles for the nanny. However, when she does start lunch (in about 2 weeks) I will definitely be telling the nanny what to feed her. I don't want her to maybe give her something she hasn't had or mess up my schedule. Yes I'm a bit anal. I even lay out DD's clothes every day which some friends have told me is crazy. Again...I don't want her wearing something new that DH and I haven't had the pleasure of seeing her in yet.

She's our first...if you can't tell. haha. Chat Icon

DS is 10 months old. DH usually feeds him breakfast and I tell her what to feed DS for lunch and dinner. Lunch often is yogurt or grilled cheese with a fruit or vegetable - not too exciting!

DH is on mostly table foods but eats dinner earlier than us. So when I cook or have leftovers, I usually freeze small portions for him so I can just put one in the fridge to defrost and its ready to heat up for dinner. Or there are leftovers in the fridge from our dinner the night before that he can have.

She has been with us now for about 4 months and I probably don't "need" to tell her what to feed him, but I just still do!

I would dictate initially, like when DS first started solids, I had a printed schedule and put out the jars of babyfood I wanted her to give him, then once she got used to it I could say, 1 fruit after lunch, or 1 veggie, etc.

When he got older, the same thing, pancakes for breakfast, chicken fingers for dinner, etc. But after a while she knew what he liked and just went in my fridge and fed him.

Re: If you have a caregiver in your home (re: meals)

When older ds started solids I would leave the jars out so we knew which one's he was having. Then she pretty much took over from there.
As far as ds#2 she picks what he eats - he isn't an easy boy to feed so whatever he eats is fine by me.

The only time I might say something is if I know I want to give them something for dinner that she might give them for lunch.

She has been with us for 2 years and she knows what the boys want and like.

Re: If you have a caregiver in your home (re: meals)

I used to dictate like crazy. now I try to give some direction, but there are some days that they fend for themselves.

I will say that general speaking, even though she is my MIL, she waits for me to tell her. she never takes anything upon herself (which is both good and bad) so it kind of forces me to tell her what to give him.

If I don't tell her, she feeds him the old standbye...eggs, beans, and fruit Chat Icon

I know that if it was a nanny and not grandma, I'd have his entire menu planned.

Re: If you have a caregiver in your home (re: meals)

It's totally up to her... she knows what we have in the house, and DS is a sort of picky eater, so any food she gets him to eat is fine by me (he's 2).

DD (9 months) is the same - she has a bottle schedule, and she gets 2 meals and a snack with the nanny, so the nanny chooses which jars to give her. She's not on table foods yet.

Same for me. If there's something in the fridge like leftovers that will be good for the boys I let ILs know. I try to make some suggestions, but for the most part they do it themselves. For better or worse Chat Icon .

They are 12.5 months.

Re: If you have a caregiver in your home (re: meals)

I am a SAHM right now but when I did have a nanny-I only bought certain foods for my kids, had them in a special place in the fridge and let her know what I wanted to have them eat.

ETA-in general I would say carb, protein and veg at every meal-with fruit or yogurt for "dessert"

Re: If you have a caregiver in your home (re: meals)

My ILs watch both DDs in their house. For my older DD I don't dictate anything...my MIL gives her whatever she likes for breakfast and lunch. With DD#2 I just said to give cereal and a fruit at lunch and cereal and veggies for dinner.
