If you have a family member watching your baby...
How much are you offering to pay them? Our cousin is a stay at home mom, and offered to watch our baby while we work...

My mom is watching the baby one day a week and my husband the other, im going to work every Sunday and Wednesday at the hospital. I offered my mom money but she wouldnt take, i figure i will get her lunch, gas up her car, and do things like that. I think maybe you can come up with a flat rate, if its the same hours every day, i know the going rate for babysitters is anywhere from 10-15$/hr.

Re: If you have a family member watching your baby...
This baby isn't going to have any grandparents, so that option is out. I know that our cousin would do this for free...but I really want to pay her.
If I offered $10 per hour, that would be $1600 per month...daycare is that much!
Anyone else not having some one who will do this for free???

Re: If you have a family member watching your baby...
My mom & dad will be watching him 3 days a week, but are refusing payment...so we will be buying them each 2 or 3 round-trip tickets to England a year + bus fare so that they can go see my brother & niece (their 1st granddaughter). They can turn down $, but being retired I know that they won't be able to turn down the tixx

My MIL is watching DS one day a week & we will not be paying her. We will be supplying her with food & also do special things for her at other times.
My BFF's mom that will watch DS 2 days a week, we will give her $100-$120 cash a week. She is retired & will just like the spare cash.

daycare I'm pricing is anywhere from $280-320 a week.
Based on that, considering that she is doing you a huge favor and she could probably use the extra cash ... I would probably offer her $200 ?

$200 Seems like a good number to pay her...kind of what I was thinking..$800 month is a nice amount! Thank you!

Re: If you have a family member watching your baby...
My mom's also watching DS 3 days a week when I am in the office...She refuses to take money, but I am thinking I'll have to buy her a car in a couple years to repay her. Seriously, she won't take money, and I would never let her do this for free, so we're talking about some really extravagent gifts to repay her!
I would probably pay a cousin $750-800/month...Daycare centers are more, but I think are tax deductable and for me I can use pre-tax salary for centers, so that would account for a difference in price...

Re: If you have a family member watching your baby...
my MIL is watching the bebe.
she lives with us, and is very excited to watch the baby.
we already pay for all of her living expenses etc, so we will continue to do that, plus continue paying for her airfare for her vacations during the year. we have a sort of cost-sharing agreement with my BIL, b/c she also watches his 2 girls, and had done so free of charge since the first was born almost 12 years ago.
ETA: I was out of work for a while the year my god son was born. when their nanny quit, I started watching him. since I was unemployed, I needed to get paid, but I undercut the rate the nanny was getting by $100 (they were paying her $250 per week, I did it for $150 per week)
it saved them $400 a month and allowed me to get paid spending time with my little love, who I am extremely close to this very day.
I think anything in that range $150-$200 would be great and more than appreciated by your cousin.

Re: If you have a family member watching your baby...
My mom will be watching our baby boy. She is quitting her job to do this for us so I will definitely be paying her.
We plan on paying her about $200 per week and hope to be able to work it out so she only watches him 4 days a week.
By agreeing to be with him from about 7 to 7 every day she is giving up a lot, primarily contact with other adults and some freedom. Caring for a child at home can be a lonely experience so I think that anyone who agrees to do it should be compensated in some way.

Re: If you have a family member watching your baby...
My parents are watching our baby one day a week and taking no money. If I had a family member do it I would probably pay $200 a week.
ETA: My aunt had mentioned someone who would do this out of her house and said that was the cost, that's where I came up with that number.
