Piercing baby's ears before 1yo... Give your two cents... :-)

Let me know what you think... I'm on the fence with this. I think if I do it when Gianna's young (now at 5 mos), she won't be phased by earrings and she may not play with them as much when she gets older. Also, she is more fearless right now and she won't even remember having it done.

Am I trying to rush things by getting her ears pierced now? What would you do?

Thanks!

Re: Piercing baby's ears before 1yo... Give your two cents... :-)

Both my daughters had them done young. My oldest was 1 1/2 months old and my youngest was 2 1/2 months old. I think its a personal decision. I remember getting my ears done when I was 7. I remember it hurting and its not really that great of a memory for me. So I decided that I didn't feel it was something I needed to wait to put my daughter through. My oldest use to mess when them and she lost a few pairs of earrings when she was around 1 1/2 years old. My youngest is 1 1/2 and has never lost any and never plays with them. My girls never really cared they were there. They did cry when they were pierced but it lasted less than 1 minute and it was over. They never cared when I cleaned them and its just normal to them to have them. My youngest has had them for over a year my oldest has had them for over 2 years and they have never had infections or any other problems with them.

I have got quite a few rude remarks from strangers about them being pierced. It amazes me the things strangers care so strongly aboutChat Icon

I feel its better to get it done early! They don't know where there ears are yet so they can play with them and get them infected. Julia got them pierced at 3 months, and had no problems.
I have heard a lot of stories from people who waited till there kids were older and ended up having to take them out cause they got infected, my parents waiting till my sister was like 10-11 and she ended up getting a bad infection in one of them and had to take it out, what a mess!

My intention was to get it done on my daughter. I brought her to the doctor to get it done and the doctor said she didn't want to do it. She said that at this age their ears are so small and if she is off by a little that as she grows the earrings not being at the same spot would become VERY obvious.

With that being said, now I wish I would have checked with another doctor in the practice. I know my dd wants earrings but I know once she feels one go in now there is NO way she is going to sit for another one. I truly think that doctor just didn't want to do it and said that to talk me out of it. She did and now I regret it.

I think its better to do it now when they don't know.

If I had a DD, I would do it as a baby. I had mine done at 4 yrs old and didn't sit still and needless to say, I've had mismatched holes my whole life. I think baby girls with earrings are adorable!

Re: Piercing baby's ears before 1yo... Give your two cents... :-)

We knew we were going to get DD's ears pierced, but DH was also on the fence as to when. I remember vividly getting them when I was 5- and I was definitely scared! My friend wouldnt let them do the second ear!

I think most girls do end up with getting their ears pierced, so for me, I wasnt nervous about waiting for her to ask, and figure that if in how ever many years from now, if she doesnt like them, she dosnt have to wear them.

We were in the mall one day and ran into a friend whose daughter was a little over one, and I noticed her ears were pierced. I asked when she had it done and she said around 1 yo. she said she regretted waiting that late. The reason why was because at that point she knew much more about what was going on around her and it was really tough to hold her still so they were able to do both ears at once. I know it was a lot easier to hold DD when she was 5 months vs. now. Now she is a squirmy animal. So we went right then and there, it was quick, she screamed for 20 seconds and stopped, we gave her a bottle and she was fine. She has never noticed them since. Chat Icon

Re: Piercing baby's ears before 1yo... Give your two cents... :-)

I was on the fence about this for months and just got my DD's pierced 2 weeks ago at 7 months old. My ped agreed with my decision. She has not touched her ears at all and they never even got red. They look wonderful!!! I had the ped numb her earlobes and it was quick. I figured I'd do it now rather than later, and DD had no idea.

But it all comes down to being a personal decision :)

Personally, I have no interest in piercing DD's ears right now. It's cute but to me it's one other thing to take care of and I don't want to worry that she'll somehow get the earring out and swallow it. (It happened to my BFF's DD) I'll wait until she's older and then she can decide if she wants her ears pierced or not. I didn't get mine done until I was 13. I'm not really in a rush to get hers done. Chat Icon

I did it for my first DD at 4 months. It was fine, she didn't cry and my pediatrician did it. I don't think I would have trusted a regular store to do it. It was easy to take care of, she's 2 now and doesn't pay much attention to them at all.

Same here-this is how it was for me and I still have memories of the day-feeling so fancy and grown up, going to the jewelers with my Nana, going to Macy's to pick a special pair of earrings for later and then lunch Chat Icon

I had my dd's done at 4 months old at the pediatricians office. I felt it was best then since she did not develop hand/eye coordination as of yet and did not know they were even there. I was able to clean them with no fuss.

IMO, if I had a DD I would do it now. My brother did his DD's @ 9mo, she never knew. As she got older they became an issue because she knew we were changing them.

DD is getting them done on Monday. She will be 3 months. Like most everyone else said. She'll be to young to remember it and she's also to little to play with them. I have to admit though, I am very nervous about getting them done on Monday.

I see both sides of it, and I think it is often based on your own experience of having your ears pierced. For me, it was a great memory. I want to wait until DD is old enough to ask, and I want to make it a special "big girl" day for her. We will get her ears pierced, go someplace she picks for lunch, and then do whatever she wants that day. But, I definitely understand the fussing with the earrings and increasing the chance of infection. I *think* it's probably best to do either very young, or wait until they are old enough to understand they can't mess with them, and are capable of taking care of them on their own. (so maybe 6, 7, 8?)

For my DD, I know that if I pierced her ears now, she would not be phased. She got her shots last week and for 2 of the 3, didn't cry one bit--she was completely unphased. For the 3rd, which the nurse said would burn and hurt bad, she let out a whimper, and then it was over. I'm hoping that sticks when she's older so she won't be phased by it!

We did it at 3 months, I was for it and so was DH, I got mine done at 5 years old and so did DH's sister and we both remember us screaming and running around with one pierced ear...so we figured if we did it early on, the trauma is less..Chat Icon

I will wait until she asks. What if she doesn't want holes in her ears? I feel funny doing something like that to her body when she may not even want it!
