if you have a window in the shower....

what possible issues can happen (if any) with the window being in the shower??

right now, the bottom part of the window is turning this pink-ish color... like it almost looks like its soap scum or something, but its a pink color... i tried to clean it, but it wouldnt come off b/c its on the wood part of the window

anyone else know what is going on with my window?? what else could possible happen with it that i should know about?!

Re: if you have a window in the shower....

it sounds like the wood is getting soaked with water and it could be mold that is growing. I had that in my apt. it was a pain in the butt to try and keep dry but nothing worked.

Pink means mold. I would try to clean it with some kind of bleach product.

Re: if you have a window in the shower....

yes it is probably mold starting - we have a window in the shower and it's the worst to try and keep it clean - when we re-do the bathroom we are moving the window!

Re: if you have a window in the shower....

I would mix 1/2 water 1/2 bleach, spray it on and let it sit for a bit before wiping it down.

We have a window in the shower, but not a wood window. I'd be nervous with any type of wood in the shower.

Re: if you have a window in the shower....

When we bought our house this is what the last owners did to the wall with the window in the shower.....which was cause from water seeping down behind the tiles....it was rotted wood, mold....not good.

We re-built the wall and have watched it closely since...re-caulking when needed...

So, I would clean with bleach and maybe make sure it hasn't leaked behind tiles (if there is anything there)

Re: if you have a window in the shower....

When I moved into my apartment I repainted the bathroom and Home Depot suggested I use some special waterproof paint on the wooden window frame in the bathtub...I haven't seen any mold yet!

It sounds like mold. I wouldn't worry about it, it will grow in a shower if water stands or is absorbed. But the problem with wood is that it does tend to absorb everything.

For some crazy reason, whoever replaced our windows decided to put a beautiful, untreated Andersen window with wood frame in the shower in one bathroom. So ours has some mold as well, and though we cleaned it with bleach, it didn't all come off.

Here's how to clean it:

Spray with water first (so the mold spores don't fly around while you are cleaning)
Squirt with bleach and let it sit awhile, then resquirt and wipe or scrub. It may not all come out of wood.
Once the area is clean or pretty clean, shellac the window or look into the waterproof stuff a previous poster mentioned. DH treated ours with some sort of waterproof shellac. This will keep the mold from growing and prevent the wood from absorbing more mold spores in the future.

Re: if you have a window in the shower....

We were going to have a window in the shower but they took it out during the framing process.

Mold was a big issues as well as rotting of the wood. We have a steam shower and that would of made it 10 times worse.
