If you have wood floor and a wood staircase...

what is on your stair case (is it wood or carpet) and is it the same color as your floors? We currently have tiles at the bottom of the staircase and carpet up the stairs and in the hallway upstairs. I would love to put in hardwood floor eventually but wasn't sure what color would look good. Our staircase is oak (light wood). Also, do they have to redo the entire staircase (I have carpeting along the side of the stairs as well)?
Looking at the front door (from the dining room) toward the stair case - tiles are a very neutral color right now

ETA: Sorry, should have asked this originally but does anyone have pictures? Especially if you have an open staircase like I do...
Or even a website to get ideas from?

Our wood stairs match our upstairs wood floor but, not the downstairs (the upstairs is newer and the downstairs is the original). It also matches the banister for the stairs.

Our staircase matches the wood on the 1st floor. We have carpet upstairs so I'm not sure what the floor is like. We just both the house last Sept.

we have wood stairs and tile at the bottom. the picture give you an idea, we have since put a runner on the steps. Don't mind the pic we were still doing construction in that part of the house! There is only a small section of tile... the tops of the steps match the stain on our floors through out the house, the backs of the steps are painted white.

pic too big, sorry!

Ours is the same flooring on stairs and at the front door. These are from when we were doing renovations. There used to be carpeting that we ripped up completely on stairs/LR. We also did not put a stair runner or anything on the stairs.

Stain on stairs matches floor. We have a runner that is the same carpet as on second floor.

The stairs match the floors. We are adding a carpet runner next week to jazz it up a bit.

Re: If you have wood floor and a wood staircase...

We also had carpet on our staircase. When we pulled up our carpet we had construction grade pine. cheapest of the cheap. We had empire come. Instead of us redoing the entire staircase they put they used a staircase kit which over it. Looks amazing. You would never know.

we just have to do the moldings etc.
