Do wood stairs have to match the color of the floor?

I desperately need opinions on this. Our basement renovation is almost complete. Today our new stairs were stained a dark color (almost like a walnut). We plan on getting laminate flooring to put down. Does the color of the floor have to match the color of the stairs? If you have pics of different colors, I'd love to see them. Thanks!

i would think so, but i am not positive. maybe you don't want the "fluidity" of upstairs to downstairs...

Honestly, not sure what I want. I know I just want it to look nice!Chat Icon I feel like I used to know so much about designing but now I feel like I know nothing.

Nooooooo - how many times have you seen carpeted stairs come down onto a wood or tiled floor in the foyer/entryway?

You're fine. That will look great.

That would mean that upstairs and downstairs floors would have to be the exact same wood, since the stairs meets up with both of them. Many people have different flooring on different floors.

No, and the only reason I know this is bc DH works for an architect and he asked. He said that stairs are hardly ever the same color as the flooring you put down.

We are redoing our stairs and we are staining the stairs a color close to the color of the laminate flooring we already put down, but it is not exact.

I dont think it necessarily has to match, but you could get flooring that compliments or goes nicely with the stairs.

Our stairs are lighter than the laminate that is downstairs. We like it. But we also made sure it complimented each other.

These were taken before we finished the family room.
