If you live on the water
do you have a fence in front of the canal, KWIM like in front of the dock? We don't but most people around us with kids do. We weren't planning on getting one because it's not our home, we rent but we were on a walk the other day and the landlords who live across the street came out to chat with us and said that we should think about getting a fence in the backyard because we have a DS. I think for safety, yes it's a good idea but it's a huge waste of money unless we end up buying this house in the future.
IDK, what would you do in this situation. DS is only 9 months now so isn't really running in the backyard yet. For those with older DC is this going to be an issue for me?

Re: If you live on the water
I don't live on the water, but we have a pool in our backyard. THe fence is around the entire backyard. Not around the pool separate. We are hiring someone to install a safety fence just around the pool for the reason of him falling in.
I think it's a good idea to put in a fence now. Once they start walking that's it! Look into some safety fence places in your area. When I was looking online at places I did see some pics of fences on the dock.

Re: If you live on the water
I don't live on the water, but I would 100% get a fence whether I rented or owned. I think it would be negligent not to.

Re: If you live on the water
thanks for your answers. I think I am def going to get the fence now. I was thinking that I would never let him in the backyard without me... water or not and that I'd be there to keep my eye on him so that nothing would happen but you are right, anything could happen in a few seconds so better safe than sorry.

Re: If you live on the water
My dad does and has a fence around the whole yard and a section that opens to get to the dock. I would definitely get one even if you're renting, maybe the owner will pay for it or split the cost with you?

Re: If you live on the water
We live on the water and our backyard is currently not fenced. We don't really utilize our backyard with DS yet because of it. As soon as we are able to financially, we are getting it fenced.

Re: If you live on the water
You know how many of us learned too late that the baby can roll over & they roll off the bed.
Many of us also learn that the kids can open the door by themselves the same way.
Absolutely get a fence.

Re: If you live on the water
I would talk to the landlord about it to see if he would go in on the cost. If not I would put one up anyway.
It will never be a waste of money to keep your child safe.
If the landlord won't even let you put a fence, I would move.

Re: If you live on the water
IMO, it would all depend.
Is your child going to be outside playing without you there? If the answer is no, then i woulnd't put one up.
We live in a complex where my DD's can't go outside and play unattended for traffic and safety reasons, i see this as being the same thing as being outside by the water. I woulnd't let my child out there unattended without a fence.
I used to live on the water when my older DD was little and we never fenced it in, we just never let her outside by herself.
