If you make your own baby food question about apples and pears...

Usually I blend them with other stuff so never noticed before but, am making them right now and just a few minutes in the container (while I am blending the next batch) and they went from white to brown!!!! Is this ok to feed my DD? I am assuming it always happens I just don't notice so it must be fine?

Also, do you skin them or leave skins on? TIA~

I take the skins off.

They turned brown because they oxidized. They are still fine to eat!

Since DS is only 7 months old, I take the skins off. For pears, I peel, then steam and mash. For apples, I do the same, or I leave the skins on, core, and bake in an inch of water for 40 mins at 400. I did it this way last time and they came out so tasty when mashed/pureed.

Mine never turned brown. I pureed it and froze it right away. For the fresh ones, I never really noticed those turned brown either.

For the 1st few months (4-6m) I peeled almost everything. Pear skins have nutrients in them, so you can keep them on. I learned that from wholesomebabyfood.com. I stopped peeling around 6m bc I wanted DS to get used to thicker textures. He was always fine. Idk if this is weird, but I washed them with soap and water first.

I take the skins off for now, I think it is too rough on their little tummies to digest. I bake my apples, and they were so yummy. The did turn a light brown color as opposed to store bought which stays white from the asorbic acid, prob lemon juice.

Its fine, if you are comfortable with introducing lemons, you can add a little lemon juice to them.

I just puree and freeze while its still warm from cooking.

Always take the skins off! You eliminate a lot of pesticides and air borne pollution that accumulates on teh skin by doing this. Even if your going all organic, apples and pears are notorious for sucking up all the evils in their skins.

Re: If you make your own baby food question about apples and pears...

I've given my son apples and pears both peeled and with the skin on (as he got a little older). I did wash the fruit before cutting and cooking if I left the skin on. You can do organic to minimize the pesticides. They also make a special soap you can buy to wash the fruit if you don't want to buy organic. I wish I had the name of it (I never bothered though).
They do turn brown if you leave them out in the air or in the fridge after you peel/cut them. Pretty much anything with a white flesh will turn brown like that, but it is fine to eat; nothing wrong with it at all.
That being said, I also would freeze the purees as soon as I could. When I started dicing the fruit though, I would just cut enough for a couple of days and put them in a mason jar with the lid in the fridge and they were fine.
