If you switched from oil to gas...let's talk
DH and I are considering switching from oil to gas. We know there is a gas line near our house. Are you actually saving any money? I heard it costs about $4500 to covert, does that sound about right?

$4500 is about right. We had National Grid come and they bring the gas line from the street to the house for free. Then you have to have a company come and install the gas burner and hook it up to the gas line (and they arrange all the paperwork etc with the town and have Naational Grid come to test the system). We are having that part done next week, so I don't know what the monthly savings will be, but I can't wait to be done with oil.

DH & I converted in our first house and our bills were literally cut in half. It cost us about $5,000 for the first house and National Grid brought the line to the house for free. We just moved in August and wanted to convert this house too. National Grid quoted us $3,000 to bring the line to our house, even though the next door neighbor has gas. Basically, they give you the first 100 feet for free and there is a fee for each additional foot in needs to be brought. However, if any of your neighbors convert to gas within the next 5 years or so, they do refund some of that money. We negotiated with them and had our installation guy negotiate too. It wound up costing $7,000 total to convert this house, but I have NO regrets. We wound up paying $1300 for them to bring gas to us and around $5700 to the company to convert us. This was really only $700 more than our first house and this house needed 3 zones and it's a much bigger house. I say it was very fair! It saves us a lot of money and we don't have to worry about running out of oil. I love cooking on a gas stove and I love my gas dryer.

I converted in August, it costs me more than 4500 closer to 7000. It was the best decision I made, I used gas for heating, cooking and the dryer. I never paid for oil, but according to other peoples oil costs I'm saving big time.

If you don't mind me asking, what are the monthly bill costs? Is it worth the switch?

Our LIPA bill is about $160 every other month and we pay $200.00/month for oil. I'm just not sure if we would actually be saving any money.
