If you use Elderberry syrup... does your pediatrician know about it?
So far elderberry syrup has been AWESOME for us, I've been giving it to the kids daily since the winter arrived.
However, I feel like I'm kind of playing by my own rules here, reading stuff on the internet to help figure out potency and dosing, which seems a little reckless.
Our next well visit isn't until May and this doesn't seem worth calling about, so I figured I'd ask if any of you have told your Dr's that your DC is taking ES and if they approve? (because it's certainly less reckless to get the approval of a stranger on the internet's Dr. )

I give my kids elderberry syrup and I agree it is amazing. I make it myself and know exactly what ingredients are in it. I have not run it by my pediatrician, nor do I plan to.

I've never brought it up and don't plan on it either. I think there's a ton of other things we give our kids on a consistent basis that are probably far worse than elderberry syrup.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I'm curious about this now. What is elderberry and why do you give it to your kids?

Most doctors poo poo on anything natural, and will dismiss that it actually works. So no, I wouldn't run it by them.

I don't use it, but I tell my ped everything I give my kids. I guess I just feel like they should know those things. Plus, I also trust his opinion.

This! I love my boy's Ped, but I just know he'd say something like... Well, if you think it works.
I remember when DS2 had a clogged tear duct. It was always crusty. The Ped saw it and told me to massage it with a warm wash cloth, etc. Finally I read to try breast milk. I tell you it was gone the next day! I told the Ped and he still didn't believe it.

Why would they want to accept anything that might take away from their business or depart from the paradigm in which they've been taught. Eta: there are studies in pub med that discuss the efficacy of elderberry syrup.

I told my ped that I give this to them along with probiotics daily and was told 'there aren't enough studies that show any of those things work.
Normally I value his opinion but this time I decided to ignore it. Knock on wood this has been working so good for us.

I get mine at the Vitamin Shoppe across the street from my building because its easier for me to grab when I am literally pouring the last tsp that morning.
I know Amazon sells it as well.
I get the Nature's Way brand

Exactly because Elderberry reduces the amount of sick kids they get to see and that is BAD FOR BUSINESS!
Not to mention they probably get kick backs from the drug manufacturers to keep pushing the Tamiflu.

And that's another thing I can't stand- there aren't enough studies proving it works. If I am able to fight off a cold in a day by taking it, that is all the STUDY I need to prove it works. Period. The end. As long as it isn't causing any harm, WHO CARES about studies. So annoying.

My kids have been taking it for over 2 years. I mentioned it a while back & my ped just said if it works, use it. He trusts my judgement. I too make my own, so I know what's in it

. There actually are quite a few studies on it. Not a ton ,but it definitely isn't some voodoo spell that has never been looked at scientifically.

I give the syrup and never thought to tell the dr. It's a supplement. I give them vitamin c too. Same thing. I also don't give the prescription vitamins with fluoride bc my kids won't take them. I give flint stones.

ITA: immune system being revved up does bad things too (I have an autoimmune skin condition & have seen far worse than mine: t's common when you know what to look for).
Lots of things that are herbal & home remedies have real side effects in certain patients (ginko works, but causes bleeding... which can be serious if taken with aspirin). Heck, we get lots of meds from herbals that are being developed.
I pass everything by my ped & my own doc... even if they , they can at least warn me of anything I may not be aware of.
