I went to Oswego and loved it, then went to grad school at Hofstra and CCNY. It was fun to see how the campuses were so different.

Pace in westchester. Mostly everyone that boarded was from the area, so it was a ghost town most weekends. I ended up going home every weekend. I was coming from an all girls high school. It was a hard transition. I transferred home after my second semester.

I went to Pace in Pleasantville but commuted from the Bronx. Graduated in 00

I would have graduated in 2000. My suite mates were from the Bronx and my roommate lived 10 minutes from school, but dormed.

Thank you everyone who took the time to respond! I've gathered a nice list of colleges to visit this year. She did a summer program at Gettysburg and lived it, didn't want to come home. So I know she will love going away.

Re: If you went away to college...

I took the loooong way through college:

Started in 01 at University of Tampa for 3 semesters
Transferred home to Nassau for 3 semesters
UMass Amherst for 2 semesters
Back to Nassau for a semester
Finally graduated from Farmingdale in 08

As someone who wanted to go far away for college I have to say that I wish I had started local and transferred away once I knew what I wanted to do. I started as Elementary Ed at Tampa and knew by the end of my first year that it wasn't what I wanted to do. After that I kinda felt lost and none of their majors/programs really appealed to me.

Being that far away from home was awesome (except for 9/11 and the weeks after). I had an amazing experience in Tampa and still keep in touch with the friends I made there.

UMass came at a time when I really was ready to go away and knew what I wanted to do but I met a stupid boy the summer before I left so my heart was never really in it.

After that it became more about just finishing because I was turning into a Van Wilder lol

Re: If you went away to college...

I wanted to be in a major city, hated the idea of being stranded in the middle of no where on a campus. Narrowed my choices down to Boston and DC. Wound up going to American University in DC. I've been here in the DC area now for 20 years... love it.

If you went away to college...

Ithaca College. It was on my radar since I was about 12, since I was a Violinist and my teacher said it would be a great place for me. So naturally, I hated the idea of Ithaca, but applied and auditioned anyway, mostly because I was forced to. Once I was accepted, I couldn't imagine going anywhere else.

Best decision ever. I feel like I got a great education (double majored in business and music) and made some of my best friends there, including my DH, who strangely thought leaving San Diego for upstate NY was a great idea. I'm glad he did :)

Just wanted to add...I had friends who went to Marist, and they loved it. I visited frequently and loved it there.

If I could go back and choose again, I would pick Marist. I had it narrowed down to Scranton and Marist the first time around.

I went to the University of Scranton my freshman year. I hated it. So then I transferred to CW Post and dormed there. Had a great 3 years living at Post...also met my DH there.

My sister went to Boston U.

My best friend went to Quinnipiac and I went to visit her all the time. Beautiful campus and so much fun.

I went to the University of Scranton for a year, and I hated it there. Maybe it was just the time I was there, but the people I encountered were primarily conceited, rude, and entitled. I transferred home and had a blast in my college years; I don't feel that I missed anything that I wanted to have.

I went for a year and hated it too! I had Nazi RAs and didn't get along with my roommate. I couldn't wait to get out of there! I wanted to transfer after one semester but my parents made me wait out the whole torturous year.

I went to SUNY Delhi, while it was still a 2 yr school. LOVED, LOVED, LOVED it. I was heart broken to transfer. I then went to New Paltz. I hated the school but loved the area. My brother went to Lafayette College in PA. He had the most amazing experience and made the most amazing friends.
Just a suggestion, I had a wonderful experience studying abroad in London. I don't know if that is an option for your DD, if so make sure the school she picks has a great program. It was without a doubt one of the best experiences I have ever had.

Delhi is 4 years now? I went there 2 years and transferred to stony brook but lived off campus then. I sometimes wish i was in 1 school for 4 years and made more friendship bonds.

I'm not sure if it is, across the board but I know a number of majors now allow you to get full degree. What yrs were you there? I was there from 95-97.

Re: If you went away to college...

Binghamton, class of '98.

At the time I enrolled, I was bitter because Bing wasnt my first choice (my parents just couldnt afford the private tuition at Cornell or Brandeis and neither offered me significant scholarships to offset total cost of attendance). But halfway through my freshman year, I really enjoyed it and had a blast once I changed roommates (my 1st semester sucked w a bad roommate). I also studied abroad in Paris, France through an exchange program at the Sorbonne and that was an amazong experience. I highly recommend studying abroad in college, its one of the best memories from my college years.

SUNY New Paltz. Started out at NYU and as much as I love the city, it didn't have that college campus feel I really wanted. I was really really happy at New Paltz! Great school, great small town. Plus the mountains are gorgeous!

I went here as well and LOVED it. It was a terrific experience.

Re: If you went away to college...

I went to Lesley University back in the 90s. I LOVED my college experience. When I went it was all women but now it is co-ed. It is in Cambridge, MA and it is a small college in a bigish city! Great mix for this city girl.

I had a similar experience with Binghamton at first because it wasn't my first choice. But in the end I made some great friends and enjoyed my time there.

Re: If you went away to college...

I went to Siena and it was AMAZING!
I was incredibly shy, and going away to school forced me to be more social. It was life-changing for me...I met new people for all over, became more outgoing...and really figured out who I was as a person. My brothers came to visit me for siblings weekend one year and they were astounded at how different I'd become....they actually went home and told my parents "Lori is a new person!"
I also spent a semester abroad in England and it was incredible as well.
I totally recommend going away to school if you can swing it.

This is my biggest regret in life. I wanted to go away to college so bad, but my parents were totally against it & I couldn't afford it alone. Their reasoning was that I'd probably have sex if I went away, Chat Icon I was just like you, really shy, never went out of my comfort zone. I ended up doing two years at Suffolk & then transferred to NYIT. I have zero college friends. It took me until my mid twenties, through the different jobs I had, to become an adult & more outgoing. I'm 38 now & still pissed about it lol. I was accepted to a great film school in San Francisco & couldn't go Chat Icon so if anyone is on the fence about letting their kid go away...let them go!!

Arizona State, but I had family out there. I definitely regret not staying on campus & getting that experience.
