If you went cold turkey on the pacifier, how long did the crying last?
DS is 15 months, and I'd like to get rid of it. How many nights should I expect a lot of screaming? Do you think I'm crazy for wanting to get rid of it?

Just want to send you some hugs My DDs are only 8 weeks but love their pacifiers. I am dreading the say that we have to cut them out of their routine.

I am probably in the minority - by my twins loved the pacifier - i just could not take it away from them -
finally when they turned 3 - i knew it had to be soon.....but also did not want to go through the crying fits. I did it very slowly - at 3 i only let them have it at nap and bedtime - at 3 and a half it was only at bedtime - at 4 - that was it. They knew what was coming and when the whole time - there was never a tear involved.
but....thats how i dealt with it.

I think you're doing a good thing to get rid of it now, it will only get harder as time goes on!!!! I can't really give advice, DS was self-weaning around 8 months, he just looked at me, went "Pffffft" and never took it again

Re: If you went cold turkey on the pacifier, how long did the crying last?
Well, he can't talk so he won't ask for it. I don't give it to him during the day. DH does though when he has him . I have told my babysitter not to give it to him during the day unless he really needs it. So, most days he doesn't get it, but I am afraid of bedtime. That is going to the be the issue. DH will not wnat to let him cry and I don't want to fight with DH about it, so I'm just wondering how many nights of crying there will be. I'll fight with DH 1 or 2 nights, . But he say he can't take the crying, he has to go to work in the morning.

Re: If you went cold turkey on the pacifier, how long did the crying last?
At 15 mos we took away the binky (na-na) during the day and only let him have it for sleep/naps. At about 19mos we took it away cold turkey. He cried the 1st night for 30mins (we told him no more na-na, na-na broke, na-na went bye bye, etc) and we just let him cry in the crib to fall asleep. Cried the next day for his nap for about 20 mins. Cried the next night for about 10mins and that was it. After that he occasionaly asked for his "na-na" and we at first told him no more na-na then just ignored it when he asked and he just gave it up! MUCH easier than I expected and he was pretty addicted to it. He would go upstairs at every opportunity to get it.

Re: If you went cold turkey on the pacifier, how long did the crying last?
Both my boys were just past 2 yrs when we got rid of it. Both were fine overnight and believe me, they were very attached to theirs for sleeping, esp my younger guy. I don't know if the age itself makes a difference since I did it with both around the same age.

This is how we are doing it right now, it is easier on both us and her... she is 2.5

We took his away about 3weeks ago. He is 14 months old. He doesn't look for it at all. However, in 2 occassions at night I have giving it to him bc he has cried for me not too leave the room. But, he did he not last long with it.

Re: If you went cold turkey on the pacifier, how long did the crying last?
I am waiting until DD understands the paci...until she talks really..she is 16 months. My SIL and Bro put holes in it when my niece was 2 1/2 and she could understand "it doesn't work for big kids, etc." I have a good sleep routine going with my DD now and that is not something I am willing to give up.
It is a battle I will face when she can comprehend more in terms of verbalization what a paci is and where it is going when it is gone etc...

Re: If you went cold turkey on the pacifier, how long did the crying last?
This is worth a try - it was a gradual process for me. I just posted on the paci thread about it.
I was given advice to cut the tip of it. My DD was just about 3 when I started and NEEDED it for nap and bed time. I cut just a little of the tip so there was a little more than a hole. She took it out and said, hey I bit a hole in it. I said, oh yeah look at that...then she put it right back in and went to bed. Over the next few weeks I cut the tip more and more every week or so and would just say her mouth it too big for it now and then it was so small she had no use for it but still held onto it in her hand, and then the last part of it came off and the weaning was not difficult at all because at that point she just held it and I bought her a new princess blanket and little pillow and it replaced it! Good luck - it's HARD!

Re: If you went cold turkey on the pacifier, how long did the crying last?
we have been prepping my 2.5 yr old for 2 months now that santa is going to take it and in exchange give her all these toys...she tells everyone (based on us telling her over and over) that santa is giving it to other babies!
I am going to make a big deal and leave a note with some special toys by her bedside christmas eve nght into christmas morning from santa....crossing all 10 fingers and toes that the prepping will pay off..
But she is pretty good with it...she knows she only gets it in her bed (since about a 1.5 years old) she leaves it on her pillow and it never leaves the room...
I originally said when she was born that it would be 2 yrs old...but since no one really sees her with it and it is not when she is awake I gave her the extra half year!!

Re: If you went cold turkey on the pacifier, how long did the crying last?
Thanks for all the advice. I think I might just try to stick to naptime and bedtime for now. I'm so confused. I keep hearing that the earlier you can get rid of it, the better. I will be on vacation for the next 2 weeks, so I thought it was a good time. Maybe it's worth a try with cutting a hole in it.

I went cold turkey today. DS is 14 months and he moaned for 5 minutes and fell asleep. I am throwing all of them out except one incase of an emergency.....but it's looking good so far!
