Re: If you were 35 did you have an amnio ONLY because of your age?

Age alone, no way. I think that's a very old school mentality to be honest. 35 is young nowadays in the reproductive world.

There are so many tests that give such a good idea of the baby's health that an amnio I would only consider if the non invasive tests were abnormal.

But if you want 100% results, an amnio is the only way to go.

All of my tests came back fine and my Dr is still saying I should have one done because i'm 35. When it was 1st mentioned I decided I wasn't going to do it but now that she said it again she's making me think I should. Even though I know it's not really what I want. I don't feel she's pressuring me in any way i'm just confused myself.

I opted out. We weren't finding out the sex & I don't subscribe to the "your eggs expire at 35" theory.

First off, Happy Birthday!! Chat Icon
Secondly, even though I was going to be 35 when the baby was born, I declined the amnio. In my mind, I was not going to terminate the pregnancy regardless of the results so I did not want to put myself or the baby at risk. I had a lot of complications with my pregnancy early on so DH and I made this decision for US. I am in no way saying this is the right decision for anyone else or trying to sway you either way Chat Icon Chat Icon
Because I was over 35, my chance of having a child with Down Syndrome or a number of other things was elevated but nothing would prevent us from loving and caring for our baby Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: If you were 35 did you have an amnio ONLY because of your age?

It was suggested to me twice and I also declined.

My numbers from the nuchal and the other tests were very good. I did not want to risk miscarriage to have an amnio. I also hate needles.

I agree that the over 35 thinking is a little "old school". My doc told me that pretty soon 40 will be the standard age that they start suggesting it.

Happy birthday!!! All of my other tests came back good so I chose not to have it done. We are trying for #2 now and unless it is medically necessary I will not have it done if and when we are pregnant with #2.

If I was to have a thrid (i'm 35 now) I won't get an amnio. I just don't see the need if I'm not going to do anything with the information except worry for the remainder of my pregnancy. Same reason I never had any testing done.

Re: If you were 35 did you have an amnio ONLY because of your age?

I had one for 2 reasons. I was 35 when I got p/g and 36 when I delivered. and #2, I had 4 m/c's. After speaking to the genetic counselor they told me I was at a significant risk for abnormalities because the #1 reason for 1st trimester m/c's was genetic abnormalities. I forget the numbers they gave me, but my % was HIGH.
I would say this to you, maybe talk to a genetic counselor and see what they say.

No, Amnio was offered but I declined also. I had all the nuchal tests which came back perfect so i decedided to opt out of the amnio. My doctor was fine with my decision.

I was 35 when I found out I was pregnant and 36 when chloe was born.

I did but we knew with DH that we would do it even before we talk to any Dr.

I will be 36 when I deliver this baby. I will not get an amnio done, for any reason.

Re: If you were 35 did you have an amnio ONLY because of your age?

My doctor suggested it because my blood tests were sent to 2 different labs so the results for the nuclar screening was inconclusive. She told me the risks of amnio and because I had IF issues, I wasn't risking DD. When I declined having the amnio, my Dr. supported my decision. I ended up having an echocardio gram because Down's babies tend to have heart problems. DD was fine.

Re: If you were 35 did you have an amnio ONLY because of your age?

I was 38/39 when I was pregnant with my first baby. The Dr. suggested an amnio and I declined. Then one of my tests came back elevated and I still declined. It was elevated for the guideline they set but it was still better than average for my age. I declined again.

Based on age alone, I personally wouldn't do it. I think its just a guideline. All of those percentage, ratio tests just drive me crazy.....

if you have additional tests and something comes back wonky, you can get an aminio at that time.

Re: If you were 35 did you have an amnio ONLY because of your age?

Nope. I was 36 when I had DD#1. My doc didn't even bring up amnio. I asked him and then decided (also with the guidance of a high risk doc, who saw me once for something unrelated) not to have it. All my blood levels and sonos came back normal so I didn't have it.

With DD#2 my ultrascreen came back with an elevated risk of trisomy 18. I had had a miscarriage the prior year and the baby had trisomy 18 also. I did have the amnio because of this risk. I was 39. I probably would not have had the amnio if all my tests had come back normal again.

Re: If you were 35 did you have an amnio ONLY because of your age?

My 35th birthday was a month after DS was born. My DR. said that an amnio wasn't necessary because I was under 35, but up to me. I jokingly said "Wow, must be an important month to be the difference between needing and not needing an amnio"

He said it was more that all of my other tests were normal, that 35 was a guideline and not the date that all hell breaks loose in your body. Chat Icon

Same here. If the screening tests showed anything to worry about, I might have considered it, but since all looked good, I decided not to do it. I was 39/40 when I was pregnant.

My doctor offered it, didn't say I should do it....I was 37 when I got pregnant....I wouldn't have mattered what the results came back as, so we opted not to do it.

Re: If you were 35 did you have an amnio ONLY because of your age?

I was 35 and was not planning to have one, however I was told that the results of the ATP test showed a 1:63 chance of downs so I opted for the amnio at that point. Next time around I will definitely do the amnio so as to have definitive answers that put me at ease.

Re: If you were 35 did you have an amnio ONLY because of your age?

I chose to have an amnio wit my second strictly due to my age. I wanted one with my first but my doctor was against it because I was younger than 35 at the time.

Personally, I had enough worries- I wanted at least one thing 100% cleared from my head.

If I am blessed with another baby I will certainly have another amnio.

ITA: I was like "No way is she 35"...

Happy Birthday Dawn..

I was 33 When Carolynn was born and they wanted me to have the amnio and I did BUT my blood work came back with the "risk" of her having the DS, she was measuring small, I was hospitalized, and the placenta issue...all this was happening so I agreed to it.
I also had it late in the pregnancy!

If all your tests are coming back completley fine and sonos as well, then, based on age alone, nope, I would NOT do it.
