If you were going to revamp your entire wardrobe with the help of a personal shopper
how would you do it? would you go to a dept store and use their services? if so, which one?
would you hire a stylist to walk around different boutiques with you? or a trusted stylish friend?
how much $$ would you allot for this? good quality classic work pants/dresses, a few nice pairs of jeans, tops for work/play and going out, and accessories/jewelry?
keeping in mind you could add on/embellish after this one big shop.
I am coming up on a big birthday, and I am just so tired of my pitiful wardrobe. I was thinking of throwing myself a party, but I am now really leaning towards a full on wardrobe make over. I hate cobbling together an outfit that it's basically one level above sad. I hate seeing people more put together than I am. I hate feeling like an unpolished stone next to my diamond dh.
I need/want to step it up. I am too old to feel this unkempt.
TIA.

i know Bergdorf's is supposed to be good...http://www.bergdorfgoodman.com/store/catalog/templates/Entry.jhtml?itemId=cat140006&parentId=catstore&masterId=cat000000
but I'm sure pricey.
I understand your frustration; I'd find a trusted friend...or maybe call up FIT and see if one of their students who are in fashion would be willing to come out and assist you? it could build their portfolio while also helping you.

I would go to a department store, but that's just me. Bloomingdales in Manhattan on 59th and Lex is my favorite, used to shop there a lot and I loved their personal shoppers (this was before I was a SAHM and had money to indulge )
59th Street & Lexington Avenue 1000 Third Avenue New York, NY 10022 212-705-2000

If money was no object, I'd hire a stylist to shop boutique after boutique with me so I had stand out pieces that could be paired with other items. I'd allocate $5K to the spree.. a la What Not To Wear.
I love this idea!
If you have a favorite department store, I'd consider using their personal shopping department, but when you live in NYC with so many unique boutiques at your disposal I'd want to take full advantage of that.

I'd go to a department store - and I'd try to stay with Macy's or L&T. More affordable pieces, so you'll get more for the $.

I would do Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys Co-op, Saks, or Neiman. All department stores, but they have such a wide range that you are sure to find things.
If you are asking IRL-I never hired a personal shopper, but I became chummy with a few salesgirls at Saks. They knew my size, what I liked and they would call every time something came in, hold it aside for me and let me try it first. I loved them.
Ahh...the carefree days of the past!

Ahh...the carefree days of the past! I know
unfortunately my days are not so care free (house, kid etc)
I don't think I could get Bergdorf money out of my dh for a full make over, but maybe one day *le sigh*
I go to the shops in Soho all the time, I just never really love what I bring home.
what about Nordstrom?

what about Nordstrom?
I don't love the selection at Nordstrom so much. Their site is way better than in-store in my opinion. Then again I'm speaking specifically about the Nordstrom at Roosevelt Field.
If I was going department store I'd do Bloomies in NYC... biggest selection and high end pieces that won't necessarily break the bank.

Re: If you were going to revamp your entire wardrobe with the help of a personal shopper
I did this recently. Becoming a Mom does that to you. I did it on my own. I wear jeans a lot, even to work, so I started there. I bought some really nice skinny jeans, which seem to be the best fit for me. Then I moved on to shoes. I swear, i must have bought 20 pairs of shoes/boots--I returned some, but kept 3 pairs of boots and a lot od pump/heel style shoes. I also revamped my jewelry. I went to The Clay Pot and got some really pretty stuff for reasonable amounts.
The hardest part for me was tops. Since you're in PS, why don't you go into Goldy + Mac, Lucia and Something Else just to take a look around.
Oh, and I also bought some blazers/jackets on sale when I was PP hoping they would eventually fit--a year later and they do and they are top notch quality.
I also spent some $$ on new makeup.
Anyway, all together it cost me about 7K, but I have an entire new wardrobe from bras and panties to hoisery, socks, shoes, jeans, skirts...you get the picture. It took a long time too. I started this spree in about August and I'm just ending now.

Re: If you were going to revamp your entire wardrobe with the help of a personal shopper
I think that I would spend the money on some good pants, jeans..to me these are worn more often and for longer periods of time.
Tops I would probably go to a less expensive store bc you need more of them and wear them less often (I do at least).
I know what stores fit my body best so for me if I were doing this I would hit up White House/ Black Market, Express (their pants fit me best). You know what stores most suit your body.
I am honestly not someone who spends a lot of money on clothes, so I would not go to Bloomies or Norstrom except to look on the sale rack lol.
For work clothes you might think I am crazy but Dress Barn has nice stuff (for my job I need to look NOT sexy--you may be able to wear something more jazzy in your line of work though...)
Also, don't be so hard on yourself I bet you look a lot better then you are giving yourself credit for

Re: If you were going to revamp your entire wardrobe with the help of a personal shopper
I sort of did this myself at tanger in riverhead a few months ago. I had to go out there twice, 5 hours each trip. I made a very detailed list of everything I needed and then allowed myself 1 "impulse" purchase that wasn't on the list (a Betsey Johnson dress!). I spent about $2500. I have barely bought a thing since, and will just need to do a wardrobe refresher in April or May will some summery pieces.
I work in a corporate environment, so I purchased new suits, skirts, sweaters, button-down shirts, some athletic stuff, dresses, two new coats, underwear, socks.... I had like 30 items on my list and bought virtually everything at once. Plus I went during tangers 25% off breast cancer awareness coupon thing and saved a lot that way too.

Umm hello???? What do you think I am here for.
I was waiting for you to see this.
I didn't want to bother you. it wouldn't be until some time in May and not sure you'd be up for a marathon shopping spree at that time.
unless, of course, you would be
If I had you, I'd go to woodbury.
