If you work for a city agency
Do you have a residency requirement? I'm just curious.
Several family members are NYC teachers so I know they don't have residency requirements.
My brother was NYPD and I think there were limitations on which counties outside the 5 boroughs he could live in, and he couldn't move to NJ or CT.
My cousin's DH is FDNY and they live on LI so I guess they have similar situation to NYPD.
My uncle has worked for a city agency for over 30 years and up until fairly recently had a residency requirement, but it was removed a few years ago. He's civil service if that makes a difference, I'm not sure.

Re: If you work for a city agency
I am pretty sure teachers do not have any requirements. I know FDNY has to live in NY and can live in NYC, Long Island and upstate NY , but not too upstate, I think the cut -off it Orange county. It is pretty silly, you are allowed to live in Montauk, but not some place like Hoboken.
People who do live in the city get extra points on the hiring test to encourage them to take these jobs.

Re: If you work for a city agency
We do - I work for Parks & Recreation...up until recently you had to live in the 5 boroughs...now though the union fought and won...we're allowed to now be residents of 5 boroughs, Nassau, Suffolk, or Westchester Counties... which is great because I so needed to move out of where I was in Queens at the time it happened and this (the fact that I work for a city agency) was holding me back from moving.
There are some commissioner positions that you still MUST be a 5 borough resident for but they make that clear to those that take those positions.

Re: If you work for a city agency
I am not positive about this but if you are civil service you need to live within the city limits. If you are management you can live outside the city. This doesnt apply to police and firemen
Civil service residency requirements
Pursuant to Section 12-119 et seq. of the Administrative Code, any person who enters City service on or after September 1, 1986, shall be (1) a resident of The City of New York on the date that he or she enters City service or shall establish City residence within ninety days after such date and (2) shall thereafter maintain City residence as a condition of employment.
Edited- I am wrong about the managers- they are considered city workers and have to abide by these laws too

I think they might make exceptions to this for some jobs, though. I was looking at city jobs back in 2003 or so and for my profession, I guess there wanted a larger pool of applicants because there are specific requirements, so I didn't have to be a city resident for certain departments.

I was just trying to verify this- I found out certain titles youdo have to live in city limits and other titles no. For ex. Engineering titles do not have to be but clerical ones do.

Re: If you work for a city agency
Teachers can live anywhere. I have lots of co-workers in CT, NJ and Orange. I lived in Queens for a very long time. I even work with someone who lives in the Poconos, but she stays in the city most weeknights and is pretty close to retirement.

Re: If you work for a city agency
The MTA (even though it's not a city agency) requires you to live in the 5 boroughs.

Re: If you work for a city agency
My local police dept has a residency requirement to get hired...they pull off the Suffolk list but you must live within our township...many move after their probation ends
