If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
Where do you live and how long is your commute? Do you mind it? DH and I were talking last night and we both are applying to jobs in NYC. So I am wondering where it is reasonable to look for housing.

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
We're in RVC which is about 35 min on the train. Commuting time was among our top criteria when we decided on a town. I've been doing it for 4 months and I don't like it but that's probably bc I was spoiled with a 4 subway stop commute prior to this It's really not so bad...

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
I commuted to SoHo everyday when I lived at my mother's house in Farmingville. I took the Ronkonkoma line (they have great express trains). With LIRR and subway it took me 2 hours each day.
It was A LOT. the only thing that saved me is that the house was literally 5 min from the train station so at least I didnt have to drive after such a long commute. I loved my job in the city, but the commute left me ragged at the end of the day. I ended up leaving for that reason.
I would look in Nassau towns west of Massapequa
ETA: I would sometimes take the train to DH's apartment that was in Valley Stream. that commute wasnt bad at all--40 min tops

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
We don't own a house yet, but we do live on LI in Bay Shore. I work on the UES. From door to door my commute is 2 hours each way. Too long if you ask me, but in this economy (being that it took me almost a year to find a job) I was in no position to turn the offer down. If I stay working in NYC when we are ready to buy a house, DH and I will be looking in the Garden city, great neck, westbury area as well as parts of NJ.

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
I live in Melville and take the train from Huntington to work in Brooklyn every day. 3 hours of commuting total every day. Sheer torture even w/ my Newsday subscription, library books, magazines and laptop. Aviod a long commute if at all possible. I didn't mind it at first, but now that I am preggo, I want to kill myself every morning.

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
I don't work in Manhattan, but I work in Brooklyn, and DH works in Manhattan. We live in Seaford- and to me, it is the perfect distance. We live a mile from the train station- and the train ride for me is always 50 minutes- depending on the train DH takes, it is either 50 mins or an hour. It goes by so fast.
Once I get into Brooklyn, it is a 10 minute walk from the Flatbush Ave train station- and once DH gets into Manhattan, his office is about a 15 min walk from Penn.

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
I lived in Great Neck, walking distance to the train station and worked in Chelsea. Door to door my commute was 50 minutes. The only complaint is getting on the train in Great Neck in the morning is very undesirable since it stop in Port Washington first and there are rarely seats and the people are rude!!

Floral Park.
33-35 minutes to Penn or Downtown Brooklyn.
Great commute.
Door to door - just under an hour.

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
Hicksville, train ride is around 45min, but door to door is 1hr 30min. It's MUCH, i won't lie. It's begins to wear you down, perhaps i was spoiled with a 10 min subway commute before. It's been over a year, and altough i am use to it, i still do not like it. Especially in the winter, when its pitch black when i get home and i feel like i have zero life. I don't see how i can keep these hours when i have children.
Take into account the TOTAL amount of commute time, not just train ride.

ITA with this. 45 minutes or an hour on the train might not seem so bad, but take into consideration driving to the station, parking, waiting for the train, and then waiting for the subway, the actual subway ride, transferring if you have to, walking to the office, etc. It can really add a lot of time onto your commute.

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
We are in Bethpage.
It's not bad. It's about 50 mins plus the subway which is about 10 min. Total each way about 1:15.
I do like my town. I also wish I lived closer.

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
We live in Valley Stream and I commute midtown everyday. (DH gets to commute across town.) The ride on LIRR is about 30-40 minutes depending on the train. From Penn I then need to get to my office on 5th and 44th. I leave my house at 7:30 for the 7:45 express train. I usually get to my office around 8:40/8:45. It's a long commute, but this is what I do. Do I like it? No. I had the same commute when I lived in Queens (spent more time on the subway though). This is where I make more money so it makes more sense for me to stay in the city for now. We don't have any kids and aren't planning any right now so it's not something I worry about just yet. I hope my company is accommodating when I do have kids though. It would be nice to work from home!

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
DH works in manhattan and we live out in ridge. So basically he's commuting 4 hours a day, takes the train from ronkonkoma. The commute gets to him sometimes, but he loves living out east and coming home to a "quiet" neighborhood. He used to live in great neck.

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
We live in Baldwin Harbor and it's about 40 minutes on the LIRR (sometimes 37 if its an express type train). It's really not that bad, you get used to it. Plus, you can train yourself to fall asleep and wake up at the exact time you need to

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
I live in Lindenhurst. DH works 23rd and 3rd. His commute is about 1 hour 30minutes each way. We both agree that it is a little too long and look further west during house hunting.

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
I went to college in NYC and lived on LI. Back then I took the train from Huntington to Penn Station, then the A train up to 59th street, then walked 3 blocks to get to school. It took @ 2 hours each way every day. When I was 18 I didn't care. When I considered law school in the city (and the same commute time wise) at age 30, I decided it was too much, and went to law school on LI.

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
DH works in Manhattan, in walking distance from Penn Station. We live in Bellmore. The train ride is approximately 50-55 minutes, but less when he gets an express train. We are on the Babylon line, which is one of the best lines from what I hear, and parking is plentiful at the Bellmore train station. He loves working in Manhattan and having the time to relax on the train. I'd rather him have a job on LI and be home earlier!

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
I work in Midtown and live in Wantagh. I take the Babylon line and its an express train so I get on at the first stop...then Bellmore, Merrick & Penn Station ! Takes me 10 minutes to drive to the train, 50 minute ride on the LIRR, then another 15 minutes to take the E & walk to my office. So about an hour & 15 minutes.
I don't mind the commute because I always get a seat...just wish it were cheaper. I'd like to work closer to home but I think I'd miss Manhattan & the time to myself on the train.

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
I live in West Islip and work on the UWS in Manhattan. I take the train from Copiague. The Babylon station is much closer to my house but parking is ridiculous! Anyway, my commute, including the drive to Copiague is 1 hr & 45 min. Yes, it is a lot. I often wish we lived further west but then again, I love my house and my neighborhood. It's a trade off I guess.

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
I commuted up until last July. We live in Bethpage and I worked in Midtown on the west side. Door to door it was about 1:15, longer in the morning bc I had to leave earlier just to get a parking spot.
It was fine in the beginning before DD, but after she arrived the commute really got to me and I eventually took a lower paying job on LI.
Ideally 45-1 hour would be better.

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
We own a house in North Massapequa and I work in midtown. It's just under an hour on the train. Then I take the subway two stops. The train station is about 8 minutes from my house. Total commute about an hour and 20 mins or so. I don't mind it. I used to live in Staten Island and took express buses that were the same length commute or longer.

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
I live in Bellmore and take the train from Merrick. I leave my house at 720, take the 743 train, and i get to work at 840 or so...I work close to Penn though (40 and bway). My commute is easy.
DH works in Rock Center so his takes a little longer and he is a little less happy with living on LI. haha

I worked before DD and DH is still in the city, we both worked/work in midtown...we live in Oceanside, the commute door to door is normally between an hour to an hour and 15 mins
