I worked in the city when i lived in New Hyde Park...nice town, good schools & about a 35 minute LIRR to Penn.
i live in NHP & love it. about 5 minutes from LIRR. its about 40 minutes to Penn. i work downtown so tack on another 10-15 minutes. it is draining. however, i did try looking on LI for job & the pay difference is big. i'm not talking about a $3k pay cut... more like $10-20K pay cut so i will grin & bear the commute for now.

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
DH works in Manhattan and we live in Massapequa. Thankfully, his job is literally across the street from Penn Station. But from house door to work is about a 60-75 minute commute (depending if he gets the express train or not). So most nights he takes the 5:40 train home and is walking in the door just a bit before 7pm.
I ask him all the time if he likes it or not. At first he HATED it! He used to work in Jericho but then got transferred to the NYC office. It took him a while to get used to. Now he tells me that he doesn't mind it so much because he doesn't have to sit in traffic and pay attention to the road - he can just sit on the train - read, play his PSP - catch up on work - sleep - whatever.
The down side is that he always complains about that you lose that ability to just jump in your car at your own schedule to come or go. Now you're stuck on the trains schedule and if there's delays there's nothing you can do about it. It also makes it hard for him to do anything at night because even though he is leaving work at 5:30, he's not getting in until close to 7 - then he eats, unwinds, etc and now its close to 8pm. So it makes it a bit tough.
On top of that there is the price for the monthly ticket. For him, it's about $230/month (and he doesn't use the subway so make sure you factor that part in if you are not within walking distance to Penn). But with the price of gas, depending on what type of car you drive that might equal out.
HTH! Good Luck!

Yeah, the difference in pay for me was over $30k! I'm sucking it up.

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
We're in Massapequa Park and I walk to the station every day. Door to door is about 1 hour 15 minutes.
When we were looking for a house, Massapequa Park was the furthest east I would go because I didn't want to increase the train time any more than I had to.

I don't work in Manhattan, but I work in Brooklyn, and DH works in Manhattan. We live in Seaford- and to me, it is the perfect distance. We live a mile from the train station- and the train ride for me is always 50 minutes- depending on the train DH takes, it is either 50 mins or an hour. It goes by so fast.
Once I get into Brooklyn, it is a 10 minute walk from the Flatbush Ave train station- and once DH gets into Manhattan, his office is about a 15 min walk from Penn.
Same here except I go from SEaford to Penn and it takes 48 minutes then I walk 10-15 to my job! i don't mind it all and have been communting for about 10 years now!

You're best bet is Great Neck or around the north shore LI/Queens area.

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
I used to commute from Massapequa to 50th and lex . I would take the 530 pm and get home close to 7. And the 727 AM and I was a few min. late to work every day. at the time it was fine bc I didn't have kids but now I wouldn't be too happy with the commute.

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
I have the same commute as someone else but want to add that where ever you look also factor in the parking situation at that train station. It makes a HUGE difference in terms of time and aggravation and even $. I have to pay for a private lot b/c there is no parking at the town lot by the time I travel.

I lived in Great Neck, walking distance to the train station and worked in Chelsea. Door to door my commute was 50 minutes. The only complaint is getting on the train in Great Neck in the morning is very undesirable since it stop in Port Washington first and there are rarely seats and the people are rude!![/QUOT
I live in great neck and for me its the perfect place to live for commuting to the city. I walk to the train and its less than 30 minutes on an express train to penn. There are a ton of trains in the morning, its almost like a pseudo subway. The more popular trains, like the 8:19 express are crowded but if you are in the front cars there are always seats and if you get stuck standing in the back you are only standing for a short time. I will agree though that people can be rude and I have been known to point out to people that perhaps they should let people off the train before they push themselves onto the train.

Centereach and it is long! I go out of Ronkonkoma and in the morning door to door is 2 hours. On the way home it is longer because I don't catch an express train.

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
I don't work in the city anymore, but when I did, I live in three areas.
Before I lived on my own, I was living at my parents and commuted from East Rockaway. Very easy trip into Penn. Off times you may need to transfer at Jamaica, but during rsh, plenty of trains. Not long either, maybe 40 minutes top. I could walk to the station so finding parking was no issue.
Then I lived on my own and commuted from Rockville Centre. Much busier station and I had to drive there. No spots after 7:30 a.m. But easy trip in, sometimes no stops.
After I got married, I was taking the train from Syosset. Again, busy station, but I got a spot for the 7:23 am train. Parking stickers are only $20 for 2 years! (I forget what I paid in RVC, I think when I lived there you needed a sticker). Easy commute in, but longer, express was a 50 minute ride.
I have to say the best commute in was RVC.

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
My brother takes the Babylon train - express to Penn is about 45 - 50 minutes and then the subway about 15-20 minutes. Sometimes he gets off at Woodside and takes the subway to Manhattan (around 59th and Lex) and it chops about 20 minutes off his commute (from when he goes to Penn and then takes the subway).

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
The commute drove me to leave my job in Manhattan. I commuted from Babylon, and it was a total of 3 hrs commuting each day. I was so crabby by the time I got off that train at night. The LIRR was always running late, cold cars in the winter, gross/obnoxious people on the train, I was just MISERABLE. It was the longest 2 years of my life. I would try to eliminate time on the train, and look in western nassau if possible.

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
DH works in the city and we live in Hauppauge. He takes the train from Central Islip. It isnt bad from there - 1 hour and 2-10 minutes on the train. Easy parking too - no fee. When he lived in Massapequa the train was 50 - 60 minutes. But parking is tough there.
I think you can live further out as long as you live near one of the faster lines.
I lived in Kings Park and commuted from there and that line is very long (1 hr 45 min). Kings Park and Hauppauge are not that far away from each other so it really depends upon the train station.

1.5 hour door to door from Massapequa Park. It is annoying but sometime the relaxing is nice.

Re: If you work in manhattan but have a house in LI
At first I was commuting from Babylon and when I got an express train it was just about an hour to an hour and ten mins.
Then I was commuting from Sayville and that was a solid hour and a half on an express train.
