If your 8 month old randomly wakes up crying in the middle of the night...
What do you do?
He has been STTN since 10 weeks old. My guy normally sleeps 7:30p to 7:30a. I've been watching him on my video monitor for an hour and he's just lying there awake. He just started to fuss/cry, but then stopped.
If he really starts crying, I'm torn between wanting to run in to soothe him and not creating bad habits of him waking and crying for me in the middle of the night...
What if he's teething? Do you go in and try to ease his pain?
They sound like no-brainers, but I read a book that said not to go in if your baby wakes and cries before 6am and that your baby has to learn to self-soothe. That seems heartless and un-mommy-like to ignore crying.
Just wondering what others do?

I'm torn too. This happened to us last week. When she was clearly in pain (a tooth is coming through) I went in and soothed her and gave her some Hylands teething tablets. The next night she was just whimpering to be picked up (remembering the night before?), and I let her be. I went back to Ferber and checked her at 15 minutes, and was prepared to do it again 15 minutes later but she fell back to sleep after that. She slept through the night the next night.

If DD wakes and is just hanging out in her crib, I let her be. If she starts whining I give her a few and usually she'll stop and go back to sleep. If she's screaming I go in and pick her up. If she continues to cry and seems like she's in pain from teething I give her Tylenol and she goes right back to sleep. But I only go in and pick her up if she's full on crying.

This has been happening to us for about 2 months, periodically. If it's full on screaming I go in and pick him up. Sometimes he just needs a little rocking, sometimes Tylenol and recently he's been waking up hungry again.
I'm not sure what the right thing to do is as far as sleep habits, but I can't ignore screaming.

I usually give them a couple a minutes - if they calm down right away i leave them.
if it is a wininy complainy cry i leave them
if it is after a couple of minutes and the cry sounds like they are in pain i give pain meds
but i find it is harder to get them to sleep if i go in - they usually settle down faster without interuption
