In my area, it isn't expected nor customary for a class mate to get a gift if the child didn't attend the party.
I do, however, make sure to give gifts to friends children regardless of a party or not.

Only for the kids she's really friendly with. We couldn't go to one of her best buddies' parties from school, but we still gave a gift (DD took it into school the first day after the party).
