no..... DD was out for 3 1/2 hours yesterday and I did not put sunblock on her.
they need some non sunblock time or else their bodies wouldn't be able to produce vitamin D
Yeah see in my eyes, my DD gets enough sun exposure to/from car, stores, park, etc. Plenty of Vitamin D time.
Totally! They get Vitamin D from just a few minutes a day. Not good reasoning in my book- skin cancer is very much on the rise. Dark skin or light.

I would probably put some on if he was going to be out for that long.
This reminds me that I should check with daycare to see if they are putting sunblock on him.

Same here...and I know your little Gracie is a fair-haired blondie just like my DD
Totally not judging others who don't use sunblock on days like this, just mentioning that I feel (after researching myself) that she gets plenty of Vitamin D time in the instances I mentioned.

No, but we aren't out that long. He does wear a hat though, I don't think he had any real exposed skin today
He is Whitey McWhite, I am SO not used to that

From what I understand, they really only need about 15 minutes a day and they already porbably get that when the are in the car or walking from the house to the car, etc.

Nope - didn't even cross my mind! She was out with the nanny today, so I'll have to check her to see if she got burnt at all (she's napping).

I'm not, but I'm lazy with sunblock
Ditto.
We just came in from being outside for about an hour. I honestly never even thought about sunblock.

If the UV-Index is between 3-4- which it is today and was yesterday- I just don't feel the need to slather them in sunblock.
My children aren't as fair skinned as some, but I don't think there is huge risk. I'm not even entirely confident DD was even able to get rays to make vitamin D b/c the sun never gets high enough in the sky for the UVB rays to penetrate the atmosphere anyway...
With that said, you can NOT get UVB rays while driving in the car- UVB rays do not penetrate glass. And even if you had the window open, you probably wouldn't get enough exposure anyway since most people drive in the early morning- to and from work- and the rays aren't strong enough to give enough UVB to produce Vitamin D. The heat of the sun you feel through glass isn't UVB rays its infrared.
edited to say: an article from US News & World Report stated:
Given all the upsides of basking at least briefly in the summer sun, many experts now worry that public-health messages warning about skin cancer have gone overboard in getting people to cover up and seek the shade. U.S. News got in touch with Robyn Lucas, an epidemiologist at Australian National University who led a study published in the February issue of the International Journal of Epidemiology . Her finding: Far more lives

Re: If your child/children are spending 2+ hours outside today/this week
Be sure you are using non toxic products!
Copied and pasted
In order to protect yourself from the sun, most people have been educated to wear protective clothing, limit the amount of time in the sun, and cover our skin with sunscreen or sunblock. While many people believe they are taking appropriate measures to protect themselves, most are unaware that the ingredients in popular sun care products are toxic--even carcinogenic.
Ironically, many of the most popular sun care products list suspected carcinogens as well as endocrine disrupters--synthetic chemicals suspected in declining sperm counts and cancer of the testicles, prostate, and breast. Look at the listed ingredients of the most popular sun care products and you will find at least one of the following:
Suspected Carcinogens
diethanolamine and related ingredients (DEA, TEA),
padimate-o,
titanium dioxide
Suspected Endocrine Disrupters benzophenone (oxybenzone),
homosalate
octyl-methoxycinnamate (octinoxate)
parabens (methyl, ethyl, butyl, & propyl).
While these chemicals are bad for people, they are equally harmful to the environment. When we swim, the chemicals enter the water. Diethanolamine has been found in waterways, and benzophenone has been found in the water, air and soil.
Sunscreens can also contain other chemicals associated with skin irritation such as avobenzone, benzophenone, octyl-methoxycinnamate, and PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid).
There are good alternatives available, but consumers must educate themselves to make better choices.
One solution is zinc oxide. It does not irritate the skin and is not linked to any environmental problems.
Keep in mind, the Environmental Protection Agency does not regulate any personal care products

But I'm still pretty sure they say you only need about 15 minutes-the OP is talking about 2 hours outside.
Between the bits of sun you catch throughout the day plus the 2 hours sheis outside with her kid I think that is way more vitamin D than a person needs.
In any case, I think people don't think a lot about it in the spring but I don't see a compelling reason not to use sunscreen year round-my own makeup gives me at least spf 15 every day (but nothing will make up for the damage I did with baby oil as a teen )

Are you putting sunblock on them? At least the exposed parts (face & hands).
I am a self-confessed sunblock obsessed person with DD. I told DH to tell the babysitter today to put it on her, and I asked MIL to do it yesterday.
She just has such beautiful skin and I want to keep it that way!
DH rolled his eyes at my request, that's why I'm asking Then, in typical Earth Science teacher fashion proceeds to tell me about the sun's tilt (blah blah blah) this time of year, but I ignored him and insisted upon it
HAHA The Earth science teacher part got me on that one!!!!
I would put it on her... I put it on DD in the sun.... it doesnt matter what the tilt is..
