If your child has a peanut or tree nut allergy...
would they have a reaction to foods that are processed in a facility that also manufactures them, even though they don't contain them?
I am just checking labels and a lot of things Sash eats state this, so I am wondering if her reaction was something else besides nuts-- won't know til next week.

Re: If your child has a peanut or tree nut allergy...
It depends on how severe your child's allergey is. My DD has a nut allergery (specifically peanuts and cashews) and on the recommendation of her allergist, we don't give her any nut products.
But her allergy is not so severe that we hold back on stuff that was processed or packaged in a plant that also processes nuts. So it depends...talk to your allergist to see what they recommend.
It's much harder having a totally nut trace free/clean diet than just avoiding nuts. Good luck!

Ok-- just wondering. She has had many items that are processed in the same facility and no reactions.
We have no idea what she ate to cause a reaction because there was a bunch of things out on our coffee table at the time. I am just praying she doesn't have a severe nut allergy! I need to wait until next week to test because she still has benadryl in her system, so I am just trying to play detective.

My kids don't have nut allergies, though ds is allergic to sesame seeds/oil. etc.
Sometimes I see packages that say "may contain traces of nuts" and thikn I have seen something to the effect of being made in a facility with nuts... So I would guess there is a chance.

Re: If your child has a peanut or tree nut allergy...
This is so tricky.
Johnny has a peanut/tree nut allergy. I still give him things that say "processed in a plant with peanut products". He's never (knock on wood) had any reaction.
My friend has argued with me on this before-her son has the same mild peanut allergy but she is VERY strict. She never ever gives him anything that was in the same facility with peanuts. She orders chocolate and food off a website that guarantees no peanuts. She can't believe that I take my child to friendlys or other restaurants where they have ice cream with peanut butter.
I do the best i can and monitor everything he eats of course but i don't go crazy.
I guess the scary thing w/peanuts is that each reaction can be worse and worse. Even though he is thought to be "mild" i have been warned that there is always the chance of a worse reaction if he has peanuts again. I just use my judgment, always carry an epi pen and teach him to not take food without asking. It's worked for 4 years so far.
