If your coming to the Mommie Holiday Party come in
A couple of girls suggested the idea of having a Yankee swap. What is a Yankee swap? Great question!
It is when everyone brings a wrapped gift for $10. We will hand out numbers to everyone when they arrive. The first person will pick a gift, open it in front of everyon and sit down. When the next person goes and unwrappes a gift, they can take the first persons or keep the one they picked and so on.
Once it is all done, the first person goes again and can choose from anything that was opened.
What do you think? I'm adding a poll to be fair. If most people say "NO", we will skip it.
UPDATE:
I closed the poll. We will not be doing the yankee swap this year, but there is always next year.

At first I was thinking I am not into it, but then I realized that it might get us all interacting outside our own groups of friends, so that would be fun. Is there any way we can make a deal not to have gift cards in this? I just think it's silly if it is just trading cards, KWIM? Also, we would have to make sure everyone brings a gift. Oh, and we should make it clear that it is mommy related gifts, not kid related. And.........do we keep it PG or anything goes???????????

OR
Do $10-$15 GC in each box? Does that make sense?

That's up to you girls!! How about we see if people are interested and then we can set some rules. I just want it to be fair for everyone and not FORCE them to do this yankee swap. KWIM??? I know that some people are on a really strict budget this year.

I like the gift card idea b/c then at least everyone has a gift card as opposed to stuff they can't use especially when the limit is that low, it is hard to find good stuff sometimes.

I am not going but LOVE the Yankee swap. It can turn into something hilarious especially when a gift become the HOT gift everybody wants.

See, I just don't like having gift cards to keep track of or exchanging them. When people trade them I feel like we could have each just kept our own money. I know, I'm being silly. I'll go along with what the crowd decides in the end, though. With the Yankee Swap, we all at least have a chance of picking what we want.

I may be in the minority but I dont think its a good idea.
Everyone single one I have been at, someone is unhappy and they dont make sense to me. Usually a few people are unhappy with what they get.
And I for one always feel badly taking a gift I want from another person. Especially a stranger I'm trying to make friends with? KIWM?
Why not just do a secret santa for the same amount of $$ and have ?'s to get the secret santas ideas of what they like?

Right, I am saying that with the Yankee swap AND actual gifts we each get a shot to get the gift we want, so there is less concern about getting something we consider useless. I am just not feeling the GC thing, esp. for a yankee swap. Part of the fun is seeing what people picked to buy and seeing what gifts are popular. DH does one at work and it would be much different if it was just gift cards.

I voted "yes" for the Yankee gift swap. I think it would be a great way to interact and get to know other people.
But I don't think that just having gc's would be good.

My office used to do this but people got upset when someone took the good gift from them...so we changed it:
Everyone gets in a circle holding thier gift. A story is read and every time you hear the word left you pass the gift to the left and when you hear right you pass it to the right. In the end everyone has a different gift. If we go with the gift card idea that might be a fun way to do it.
