I realize the answer can vary greatly depending on any other issues your DC faces, but just curious.

DS is 25 months right now and has zero words, zero. He does not even say mama, dada, no, etc. He has always babbled a ton, gestures, points, signs a little, etc but no actual words or attempts at words. He's been receiving EI for OT for a few months and has finally been approved for speech, 2X a week. He starts today. Chat Icon

If your DC was similar in the speech area at 2, how old are they now and where are they as far as progress. How long until they started saying actual words? How often did they get ST and was it something specific that worked or didn't work?

I've been beyond stressed about this for a very long time and we've made an appt to see a developmental pediatrician as well. I just want my little boy to talk. It keeps me up at night and preoccupied during the day. It breaks my heart to think of what his life will be like if he doesn't start to use words before the other kids begin to notice. Chat Icon

Johnny had 10 words on his second bday...MAYBE 15 and they were all acquired right before he turned 2. And some of his language at 2.5 was echolalia (repeating back what we said) but not all. He definitely acquired his language atypically.

Now, at 4.5 he has full conversations with us. He talks and talks and talks..we have to say to him sometimes to quiet down and relax a bit because he just wants to talk to anyone who will talk to him lol. And his language and speech is typical, like any other 4 year old boy.

Your son has AWESOME signs of emerging speech. The pointing, babbling, gesturing and signs are GREAT. The speech should definitely come, he is just taking his time! Try to relax. I know how it feels to wait and wonder...Chat Icon

Re: If your DC had zero words at 2 yrs old and receives speech, where are they now?

My son Noah had his first two words ( mama, dada) at 23 months. At 2 maybe 3-4 words continued to emerge. It was slow going.

He had no reason to talk. Now in a school program, he was forced to really start making some progree as he is alone and needs to be able to communicate.

He will be 4 in early June. His last eval he was 3 yrs 8 months I think and his expressive speech was at a 23 month olds level I believe. This is because of his phonological issues. He deletes the ends of words and his pronunciation is horrible. He knows and can "say" everything...Uncountable amounts of words, it is now an issue of getting him to speak in sentances vs one or two or three word combos and getting the sounds clearer.

receptively he scores higher then his current age. He has as far as speech goes, a clear "delay" vs something like apraxia etc.

His progress really started around age 3.

He was with EI since 19 months , speech 2x's a week ( 45 min sessions) and a 1 day a week hr speech "group". Then he had at 3 a 2 day a week summer program 2 and 1/2 hrs .

When he transferred after age 3 to CPSE, they put him in a school program, everyday 2 and 1/2 hours, he gets pulled out for speech 3 times a week for 30 minutes . he gets OT and other stuff, but this is just for speech.

Hope that helps a little.

Sophia really didn't say her first true word until she was about 2.5. She is now 4.5 and is able to speak in full sentences. She does not have any converstaional speech but can ask for things and tell you things she wants with no problem. She just can not (or won't) answer any social questions. They just tested her and she tested well above averge on receptive speech and almost a 0 on expressive speech (but that has alot to do with her social issues, not because she can't). Putting her in program was the best for her speech. Every activity is based around some sort of speech and it has been wonderful.

Zoey started EI at 18 months for SpTherapry and Sp Ed. She had zero words, just babbles. Now she is 2 years 7 months and only has about 20 words. Does not say mama or dada. She has jargon and babbles and her receptive language has improved but I am not seeing the improvement I thought I would in either areas. She seems to get nothing out of the speech therapy.

DS had 5 words at 2 and speaks in full, long sentences now and uses abstract words. He was singing Puff the Magic Dragon in the car today, and I have to say, a year ago, I never thought I would hear him sing a song like that so quickly.

I really don't know how many words he says anymore, but at 2 years, I could tell you exactly what he could say.

Good luck! Sometimes speech does work very quickly.

DS is similar to yours. He is 26 months and has just started saying some more words. At 22 months he had 3 words. Now at 26 months he has about 6 words. He babbles a ton, points, and signs a bit. He starts speech next week. I'm really hoping to see improvement quickly but..... I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

It breaks my heart also when DS wants to play with other kids and they say hello and he just wants to jump in and play. I'm trying to be optimistic even though it's hard not to think of the "what ifs!"

I haven't BTDT but I will say if their are no other developmental concerns don't wait if your DC doesn't click with a therapist or if you don't see improvment in a couple of months. Several professionals I've spoken with advise waiting no longer than 6 weeks if there is no progress.
