Question for BTDT Moms/Speech Therapists Whoever about toddler words/babbles
Jordan's new fave word (of his very few) is Odie. Odie is his babysitter's dog. He has not stopped saying Odie all weekend long. I thought he knew the association, but now I'm not so sure. Every time he says Odie, since Odie's not here, I say something like, "yes, Odie is at Katie's house" or "Odie is Katie's dog, Puppy is our dog" and I'll encourage him to say Puppy. What are you supposed to "do" when they keep saying a word for something that isn't there/wrong association?
Thanks!

Speech therapist here- I would keep doing what you're doing. Help him make the correct associations and continue to reference your dog by name. How old is? Overgeneralization is very common when children are learning their first words.

I wouldn't worry. He's only just one. When they learn a new word or sound, they use it for everything. To be honest, he probably doesn't associate it with the dog, he just likes the way it sounds.
DS (14 months) calls DH mama all the time. Mama means I want something. I am not worried. At one year, he wasn't saying anything at all except ba. I am happy he uses mama and dada at all.

I'm taking a linguistics class now for my masters. From what I have learned so far, you are doing the right thing. When your DC is looking at your dog, tell him that's our dog, Puppy, just like you are doing

yeah, it's just an overgeneralization. he thinks all dogs are called Odie. He'll get it when you keep calling your dog by its name.
