Still doesnt have many words after 2 months of speech

DS is 20 months now and has been getting speech since September. Granted he cried teh first month so he didnt get much done. he does KNOW moer which i know is good, like if you say go get your shoes etc tec but he still only has about 4-5 words. Mom, dad, This and more. The teacher is telling us we have to withhold stuff until he says what we want him to say not just give it to him and thast is part oif the problem.

When did start to see real progress?

I think it really varies. I have seen children on here only need speech for a few weeks and make tremendous progress, and then others need much longer. My son started speech in home sessions at 2 years of age, and he didn't really start talking until age 3 until he went to a center based program.

My DD who turned 2 in August was only saying a few words at 20 months, but her speech exploded around 22 months and now she is speaking sentences.

So he sounds like he is on the right path, and he will be talking up a storm in no time!!

my son had speech therapy starting at 9 months. made almost no progress for years really. started to speak more when he started special ed preschool at 2 yrs 9 months. finsally starting "talking" when he was a little over 3.

my DD is now getting speech, just started though and she made more progress in the 1st 5 minutes of hte 1st session than my son did in a year.

each kid does their own thing. they'll get there. sometimes it takes a while for it to all sink in. it certainly did with my son.

p.s. my son, who had obviously huge language delays is now in the long island school for the gifted. you never know what's going to happen with these kids.

After two months, DSs speech really started to take off. But he was 22 months when he started therapy and is 24 months now. His receptive speech was always pretty good actually, it was his expressive speech that was far behind.

Talk to the therapist if you are concerned about progress, but I think it does take time. And it really has only been over the past few weeks that DS really started to trust his therapist and work with her.
