If your DC receives any kind of therapy at home (speech, OT, PT)

what do you do while the therapist is there?

My DS gets speech. I am in another room. I listen just to "see" what is going on but am not involved in any other way.

I was just about to start/prep cooking dinner (going to cook some sausage) but stopped myself. Wasn't sure if that would be inappropriate.

What do you think? I usually sit at the computer and make zero noise (or load/unload the dishwasher).

I usually go on the computer, fold laundry, unload the dishwasher, start prepping dinner. I try to make a minimal amount of noise, too!

I always stay in the same room and watch what they are doing.

I asked my therapists where I should be and they both told me to stay in the room.. I sit on the couch and watch what is going on.. I am usually on the computer or writing stuff down.. My DS (2) likes it when I am there.

I don't like to be right where he can see me because he can get extra fussy if he wants out. I'm usually in the next room where I can hear what's going on and see him slightly. I"m usually doing paperwork or folding laundry.

I sometimes sit in the same room but if DD gets distracted with my presence I leave the room.

When I observe the therapist will usually give me tips and excercises I can do with DD on my own. She will also explain what she is working on so that we are on the same page.

I think it is ok if you start cooking but you should be concious of the time so you can be available when the session is over or if they need you.

I'm always in the room but there are times I am right outside bc I need to keep my younger out of the room.

I frequently start dinner if it's a late day appointment

I do a lot of Facebooking and coffee drinking

I have been known to nap Chat Icon

EI is my "happy place" Chat Icon

(Though in the early days I was in on most of the sessions, answering/asking questions, getting tips etc. That stopped a while ago and now it's just DS + therapist and mommy is OFF duty) Chat Icon

I've done homebased OT services for over 10 years and this is what all of the parents except for one have done. The one parent who didn't sat in on every session. As long as the parent is within earshot that's all I care about. I want them to be available if I need to show them something. My sister is speech therapist and once she had a parent who snuck out of the house to run to the store.Chat Icon

Exactly, I am always right there if needed but I like to give them their space.

I do things with little to no noise as well. DS gets ABA first thing in the morning so I occasionally shower (taking the monitor with me).

I won't lie, I look forward to it sometimes bc it means I get a break.Chat Icon

For us, I can't be in the same room with my DS bc then he only wants to "play" with the SLP IF i'm right next to him. Works best if he can't see me or even hear me too much.

Today he decided he was done "playing" with her and just walked away and came to get me. Chat Icon He cracks me up sometimes.

I sit in on most sessions or at least the end.

We start early (8AM sometimes) and I'm getting DS ready for school.
I'm usually finishing breakfast dishes, wiping down counters and on mondays (LOL) cutting coupons.

I do sit in at least 20-30 mins. of the 45 min. sessions. I like to ask questions and really see what they are working on, so, I can carry it over.

I have to 100% agree with this.

My DS was getting close to 40 hours a week of therapy at home. If I were to sit in on all his therapy sessions or did things that didn't make noise, nothing would have gotten done.

We had playdates during therapy, we went on playdates with therapists, we would go food shopping, the park, I would do laundry, cook, sleep....

For us therapy started at 7am 3 days a week and his last session was at 6:45pm

We even had Saturday sessions.

When I pregnant with DD they would always tell me to take a nap. They encouraged it actually... LoL
