Re: What kind of home do you have?
It's now a fairly typical Colonial. I like having the bedrooms upstairs, and the "public" areas downstairs.
Things I don't like aren't tied to the style of the house. It's high off the ground, so you need to walk up several steps to get to the first floor. No garage.

Re: What kind of home do you have?
i'm not sure what mine is called... its basically a ranch with a walk out basement. so from the front, it looks just like a ranch, but from the back it looks like a big, 2 story house. in the "basement" we have a living area with a huge bar and couch and TV, a guest bedroom, plus another bedroom sized room that we have set up as a library with bookshelves all around (it doesn't have egress windows so it couldn't legally be a bedroom) and a small bathroom with a stall shower.
on the main floor theres a big living/dining room combo, 2 bedrooms, a big kitchen, a bathroom, and then another room that we turned into an office ( it was the old kitchen before the bigger one was added on) Things i like: i like that the "basement" doesn't really feel like a basement and has nice high ceilings and really is like another floor of living space. also, because a lot of it is out of the ground, we don't get a lot of dampness/mold, etc like some basments. i also like that the areas we use the most are all on one floor, so its really only one floor of the house that i have to keep up with cleaning. i only clean the basement if we are having friends over to hang out at our bar, or if ILs are coming to stay for the weekend.
Things i DON'T like... that our future kid's room will be RIGHT next to ours, and that the kitchen and living room are on the same floor, too. I can see that being a problem when we put the kid to bed early but still have stuff we need to do in the kitchen or want to watch TV... i'm worried we'll keep waking the kid up! LOL but then i guess we'll just use the room in the basement more. also, our room doesn't have its own master bathroom so we will be sharing with the future kid... but i grew up in a house with only one bathroom so i think we'll manage! at least we have the one downstairs, too!

Re: What kind of home do you have?
We just bought a splanch. I like the space it has, there is an den extension and a 2.5 car garage. The rooms are really nice sized (living room, dining room, kitchen, & den are all bigger than others we saw when we were looking.)
I don't like that the living room is on a separate floor (5 steps up), but I think down the line I will actually enjoy that feature (once the kiddies are old enough to take over the den with their TV, xbox, friends, etc...). I will just make that living room the adult living room. For now, it will serve as a more formal living space for holiday's I guess.

Re: What kind of home do you have?
We have a transitional 2 story. Bedrooms upstairs and LR/Den/Kit/Office/DR downstairs. I like the separation of sleeping areas versus common areas.
I don't like that due to the open style of the upstairs sound travels between floors very easily. It looks pretty but it is not practical in that area.

Re: What kind of home do you have?
We have a colonial. I like it b/c it's spacious and it's OURS.
My ideal house would have been a ranch. A large L-shaped one. With a basement.
Stairs are a bittch. I can just imagine when we have kids. Up and down, up and down, up and down. And when we're old. Uuuuuuuuuup and dooooooooown, uuuuuuuup and doooooooown.

I have a Colonial
Love it because it's an open floor plan, nice open foyer when you walk in and high ceilings. I love that all the bedrooms are upstairs as well.

Re: What kind of home do you have?
A Colonial from a cape, so the downstairs is still a cape layout.
There really isn't anything I don't like about it.

Re: What kind of home do you have?
We have a colonial that was originally a cape..
I love that all the bedrooms are upstairs..I have a thing when people are walking around by the bedrooms..
I also love that we have a big L kitchen. OUr living room as well is pretty big..
We also have a full finished basement..
what I don't like is that I know hate to say this but I think the house is kind of too big.. I dont like if I am upstairs in my bedroom DH can't hear in the basement.. But then again maybe its that selective hearing

That's what we have. We closed a little over a month ago and I've only slept there 4 nights so far but I think it's perfect for us right now as a young family. I like that we are all sleeping on one level and I don't have to carry a baby up and down stairs. I also like the open floor plan in the dining, kitchen and living room and that all our utilities are confined to a room in the basement.

Re: What kind of home do you have?
We have a Colonial. If we where to buy another house we would prob go with a split or a bi level.
The one main thing that i really like about our house is that our bedrooms are on a totally seperate floor and there is no reason for anyone ever to be on that floor, especially when we have company over.
the one thing i really hate about the house, is our laundry room is in the basement, if we ever add on, we will be making our laundry room, next to the kitchen

Re: What kind of home do you have?
we have a cape/farmhouse. It's one of the oldest on our block. It was remodeled and a bedroom was added years ago.
It's technically 4 bedrooms. Two up and two down. We use the two down for an office and a guest room. Also downstairs is a kitchen, dining room and L shaped living room. We use the downstairs giant bathroom as a pantry too. One day I will separate the two since the room is as big as our master bedroom. Upstairs are two bedrooms a master bath, laundry room and another bedroom.
Our basement is unfinished.
All in all, it's a very private house set way back down a long driveway so it's hidden. Love that. We also have a 2 car garage detached. We love those things.
The layout of the living room could be better but overall the house is great. It has charm that homes younger don't have. There is original millwork and picture framing on the walls that is in pretty good shape.
I wish the basement was bigger so we could finish it and our property is a bit small.

Re: What kind of home do you have?
We have a ranch. I like the fact that it is a ranch just fine - it's the fact that it is tiny that gets to me!
But we have a huge unfinished basement the size of the entire house, so we plan to finish it and essentially double our living space.

Same here.. and we are in the process of finishing our basement now.

We also have a large L-shaped ranch we closed on a few weeks ago. I like the size, and that all the bedrooms are on the same floor (I wouldn't consider a house with bedrooms on split floors). It's convenient not having stairs, and we have a ton of closet space and a garage and attic.
I would feel safer with the bedrooms not on the first floor though--I feel like someone can easily break in if we leave them open when we sleep.

Same here! The ceilings make it a bit difficult to fit all our furniture so we plan on dormering in the future but on the other hand, I love the cozy feel and charm that it creates in the meantime.

Re: What kind of home do you have?
We have a ranch. I think the bedrooms are small but otherwise we love it. The previous owners added a family room which completely makes the house. Plus we have a partial finished basement that gives DH room for all his crap. If I ever move the laundry up to the main floor I would never have to walk stairs again. Which IMO would be great.

Re: What kind of home do you have?
We have a Hi-Ranch. I love the open floor plan. Don't love that the main level (2nd level) is everything. So you have to be pretty quiet because the bedrooms are right there. But we have or should I say we will have a Family Room on the lower level when we are done with it, so we will probably spend more time down there. We also really like the style of the house, for some reason we were just attracted to the Hi-Ranch mostly.
Looking to buy?
