Don't decrease bottles, DS didn't start taking less formula till 5m.
When I was introducing a new food, I'd give 2 tablespoons of it a day for 4 days, twice a day (as per my peds recommendation) After that I just gave him how ever much he wants, 1 hour after giving him a bottle.
But before I introduced fruits and veggies, we practice with cereal. Took about a week to get how to eat and swallow solids. I would just offer it to him, when the mood was right. And gave him a few spoons.

Don't decrease the bottles yet. Some people might say otherwise, but when you first start solids, it's just to give them a "feel" for it, or for practice.
I did a 3 day schedule, and I skipped rice because it's constipating, and I didn't want to invite trouble. We did just oatmeal for 3 days, then sweet potatoes for 3 days, then carrots, etc. I used jarred, and to start, we'd do half a jar.
I offered it in the morning only at first, figuring if there was a reaction, we'd have all day to deal with it, not at night. Then, when I was sure she could handle the food, I'd offer an "old" food at night, and a new one in the morning. I never mixed the veggies with the cereal, but mixed the fruit.

Re: if your DC started solids at 4 months...
I've gone through the cereals but have only done once a day. Now I started doing cereal twice a day and want to start fruit at one of those feedings instead. Prob at night since he is at daycare during day and I want to try everything for the first time at home. When I do cereal I do 4tsp cereal and about 3/4 oz milk. How do I mix the fruit? Was thinking 2 oz fruit with 2tsp cereal??? No idea.

dont decrease formula. My doctor suggested to start with fruits like bananas and applesauce as well as veggies like carrots and sweet potatoes - he said if they only have fruits they may develop a taste for that and then they might not like the tatse of the veggies

Re: if your DC started solids at 4 months...
I always gave DD the bottle first because it was more important she finish that over the solids. I also didn't decrease her bottles. She had shot up to 8-9oz right before we moved her to solids and once we did she went back down to 6oz bottles and stuck with that until we dropped bottles at 17 months. At around 10 months she went from 4 bottles to 3.
When she was 4 months old she would have her morning bottle and about a half hour to 45 min. she would have solids and the same thing for lunch and dinner. Breakfast she had cereal and fruit, lunch was cereal and veggie, and dinner was fruit and veggie. I started with the Stage 1 fruits and veggies in no particular order and gave her something new every 3-4 days. Once I was done with the Stage 1 foods I went to straight to Stage 2 and but the time she was 6 months old she was starting table foods.
