If your DC would not drink milk from a sippy...

How did you ditch the bottles?

She is starting to "ask" for her baba now, and she really was never "attached" to it in the past.

She will NOT drink milk out of a sippy...Ive tried every type of cup and method of getting her to do it.

If I cut out her bottles she def would not be getting enough milk for my liking...she isn't always the best eater table food wise either...

Have you tried from the straw cups? If so, just get rid of the bottles. In a few days she will have no choice but to drink from them.

I'm no help because I didn't with DS until he drank his milk from a regular cup Chat Icon

Lexi is still on one and she enjoys her baba so much that I'm not pushing the milk in the cup too much yet...She will drink it from a sippy but she "sips" it and thats all...Not enough consumption for me yet (even though she gets lots of dairy in other forms)so I'll stick with bottle in the meantime and keep introduucing it to her to see if she likes it better over time...

Re: If your DC would not drink milk from a sippy...

We finally got rid of the bottle about 2 or 3 weeks ago. She turned 2 in January!!!!

What I did was decrease the number of bottles I gave her a day.. I think when she turned 1 I was giving her 3 bottles a day - 18oz total maybe? When I realized she wasn't going to take milk in any other form I got creative... nixed the afternoon bottle completely and gave her 8oz in the morning and 8 in the evening... so I shaved a couple of ounces off the "ped recommended" serving but I also cut out a bottle.

Sometime before her second birthday I noticed she wasn't really drinking her nighttime bottle so I stopped offering it, and filled the morning one as much as possible. Since she's closer to 2 I didn't htink it was as big of a deal.

The reason we knew we'd get her off bottles a few weeks ago was because she asked for milk at bedtime and I told her she had to drink it in a cup if she wanted any - and she did! 2 days later we did the same thing in the morning and now we're just not looking back.

It definitely took longer than "they" suggest, but since it happened for us now, I think if you continue to work on it you'll be fine.

Also, I didn't push it *too* much because the bottle was a comfort for her, and I didn't want to take that away from her kwim?

DD was and still is a terrible eater. She is ultra picky and barely takes any quantity. I didn't want to use sippy cups, only straw cups. She took an open cup by 6 months (with help) and water from a straw cup at 9-10 months. At 12 months we switched over to all straw cups. At first, she didn't want anything to do with milk in them, but was fine with milk in the bottle. After a week of trying both we decided to make her switch cold turkey. The first few days she barely drank anything but slowly began taking more and more over the course of 5-7 days. She totally caved and was downing it all by 7-10 days. I was stressed at first, but I'm glad we did it. She is stubborn so I didn't see another way.

DS only drank milk from his bottles until he was 19 months. The rest of the time he drank juice from straw cups. I am the one that delayed the switch to all straw cups. We had a few flights when he was 18 months and I wanted to make sure he was still comfy with something to suck on for the ear pressure.

Have you tried the straw cups?

She doesnt get the straw cups. I offer them to her all the time and she just chews on the straw. Once or twice, she has gotten stuff through the straw but it surprises her more than anything.

I would keep working on the straw cups. I think that will be your winner! Have you tried the "trick" where you put the straw into the milk (or whatever) and cover the the other side to teach her??

DD would not drink milk out of a sippy. we kept her night bottle until 18 months because of this. the doctor said she only need 10 oz of milk if she was eating other calcium foods. finally at 20 months she started downing milk again...partiallly due to her mommy spiking her milk with a splash of nesquick chocolate milk. now she thinks she's getting chocolate milk (it's like a tablespoon in her regular milk) and she drinks so much milk!! give it a try!

Re: If your DC would not drink milk from a sippy...

We are having the same problem Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

The biggest problem I am having is that DD is in daycare 5 days a week where she watches kids older than her still taking bottles. The daycare will give her a sippy to try but when she inevitably refuses it they give her a bottle. She doesn't understand the straw either and they can't give her all individual attention all day to work with her on it.

I've gotten some seemingly great advice from mom friends of mine but a lot of them are SAHMs who were able to work on this problem with their DCs every day. I'm at my wits end too with a cabinet full of different sippys...

So what are the tricks to getting them to drink from the straw??
