Conveniently my MIL said she wanted to but the furniture AFTER we had already ordered it and paid for it! That says volumes right there! Gotta love it! Chat Icon

This is my IL's too....they are very generous but it is only on their terms. They knew my mom was buying us one set, knew the day I was going to order it but still they waited until I had already ordered and paid for it that they offered to give us the money for the other set.

Re: If your parents or IL's offered to buy you a big ticket baby item...

My IL's paid for our crib.

Here is how it worked out:

they offered around july/august. No prices were discussed, but we took the offer and started looking at the bedroom sets.

Went to a few places and bought a set from buy, buy baby. wasn't going to come in for a few weeks, but no big deal because we didn't need it.

paid for it in full on our cc, knowing IL's would pay us for the crib, not the whole set, as that was the deal.

at my shower, I get a card with a note that this is for the crib we bought you. as I open it my MIL said, "dad will give you some money in a few weeks."

Ok, baby comes the next day as a surprise to everyone so the crib money was the last thing on our minds.

I think in November we got maybe $200 of the $600 it cost us.

A few weeks later, his dad went to home depot to get stuff for our house and DH just told him that it would be for the crib.

Come February, we finally got the last of the money.

Here is another story for you:

My mom offered to buy us avideo camera we wanted.

We went to best buy and bought it on our CC.

The next day my mom gave us a check for the full amount.

Lesson learned: don't take IL's up on any offers, ever again.

My mom said she would buy the furniture as soon as I announced that we were pg. My MIL bought all the bedding and tons of stuff for the room and gave it to us at the shower (and told DH in advance but surprised me).

My parents have not offered anythign yet, but I know they will go crazy. We ordered our own furniture. My parents have also already offered to throw a big party for the Christening. Their reasoning is that ppl will bring gifts (money mostly in my family) and we can start a nice saving account for DD. They actually did this for me & my sis & bro for all major events (christening, communion, sweet16) and invested our savings and we all had considerable bank accounts to start our grownup lives.

Since my mom paid for the shower, we told her not to get anything else for the baby...

As for the ILs it wasn't until we put a deposit down on the crib did they step up and offer to pay for it. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: If your parents or IL's offered to buy you a big ticket baby item...

my mom mentioned the furniture but didnt out right say she would buy it but im pretty sure she wants to since i just know my mom

BUT DHs aunt also said she was going to buy us our baby furniture. So I am going to have to see from my mom if she def wants to and then thank DHs aunt but tell her my mom wants to get it.. which im sure she will be fine with. It was so generous of her though!!

im sure my inlaws will be spoiling this baby so im sure they will be buying some of the larger things too.

luckily both our parents are generous!

I had told my mom that I was going to babies r us, and she had asked if she could join DH and I.. She then bought wayy to much stuff, but that's just my mom lol. MIL and SIL bought the crib and changer together, and told DH about it very very early.

Pretty much as soon as we told my ILs that we were expecting my MIL offered - no told us she was purchasing the crib of our choice - we told them when I was 12 weeks. With that said - DS is now 8 weeks old & I have yet to see the $ for the crib. Chat Icon

I think the people that offered to buy big ticket items offered before 20 weeks, because they knew I would be registering and didn't want me to put those items on the registry.

My mom bought the crib for my DS...she offered from early on in my pregnancy, my dad/step-mom offered to buy us another big item so they got our Glider (I think they asked in the 2nd trimester what we wanted-we ended up buying it and they gave us the $$). Once I registered around 20 weeks my MIL started asking what we really needed...so I said we need our car seat, well she ended up buying both (we had registered for 2 but only expected her to get one)...and we registered for Britax's too which are expensive.

My mom offered to buy the crib for us by the 14-15th week. When she spoke with MIL to talk about my shower, they discussed it and MIL decided to buy dresser/changer combo.

Well my in laws offered to pay for half of the shower and then put in nothing- my MIL brought the cake. Chat Icon They did give us $1000 to put towards the furniture though.

ETA- this time around noone has offered anything and I'm due in less then 10 weeks. We just ordered and paid for the furniture ourselves. Everyone knows I'm going to be needing a double stroller- but no mention of that either. So I guess we're on our own. Chat Icon

What's wrong with that? Joe's "adopted" parents did this for us and I am grateful not to spend the $$$ on something new that isn't used for so long. I mean why not save some money if you can get something nice for cheaper?

I'm pretty sure this is what my mom is waiting for. When my brother had his first child, me and my mom cleaned out their registry. My SIL's mom bought them the crib, but then my mom bought a lot of the other things that were there. So I wouldn't be surprised.

I just wasn't sure if parents would mention it beforehand or not, you know? Cuz I was thinking DH and I would order our crib in the next two months and we won't be putting it on our registry I imagine.
