Re: If you're on the fence, please post here! (election related)
I did have a hard time in the beginning with choosing a side. It took me a while to figure out MY priorities this election. I am a social liberal and a fiscal conservative. It came down to the fact that I have to put the economy first because this will only get worse if it continues on this downward slope. Which is why I am voting for Romney because I agree with his fiscal stances, even though it pains me that my views on gay marriage etc will have to take a backseat this election year.
I'd suggest writing down all major points and seeing which ones are of highest priority to you right now and in the near future, then decide which side that follows. It honestly sucks that you have to choose between major points, but it just is what it is, sadly. I know for me, I just moved to PA so I keep hearing my vote "counts" this year, as if it never did before, just sad how the world is evolving and yet this system seems to only get worse every 4 years. Goodluck in choosing!

I guess I don't think a president can really institute social change. Will Romney really spend time trying to reverse Roe v. Wade? I doubt it. And isn't gay marriage up to the states? I doubt the president would get involved with that either. So I think I'd vote based on how I felt about other issues, such as the economy and foreign policy, military, etc.

Perhaps, however SCOTUS is deciding very soon whether or not they are going to hear the case on gay marriage. 4 Justices are turning 80 in the next 4 years so whoever is President in the 4 years might need to appoint as many as 4 Justices.

I am still undecided. I did not vote for Obama in 2008 and thought I would pick Romney even though I am a registered Democrat but nothing he stands for is acceptable to me. I don't feel like he would represent the interests of the middle class and I am worried about his stance on social issues like women's rights, gay marriage, etc. OTOH, Obama has disappointed a lot of people, I know in my circle of friends, there are several Obama voters who are voting for Romney because they are unhappy with the last 4 years.
I took the quiz posted in this thread (very helpful!) and it says I lean 68% to Obama with a close second to Jill Stein and Gary Johnson. I am tempted to vote for a 3rd party because I just don't like Obama or Romney.

I'm not on the fence, but I took the poll and align 96% with Jill Stein. Wow. Maybe I should vote for the Green Party. Obama was 88% and Romney 11%.

Most are on the fence!! It just SEEMS people are not because on fb and in conversations those who are strong supporters of one candidate are quick or frequent to spread the word Facebook has been nasty this election and it seems supporters of one party are brutal in the personal attacks or with anyone who posts even the slightest negative thought or questions anything thier candidate does.
As others have stated-make a mental or actual list of what YOUR priorities are. most likely not all will meet but what are you MOST concerned with..economy? healthcare? national security? social issues??
For me it is national security and the economy

Am I the only person who can't see how ANYONE can be on the fence btwn one or the other?
I can understand not liking either candidate but they are pretty much opposite from each other with regard to their platforms.
I think a lot of people are on the fence because they are liberal on some issues, conservative on others, and are trying to decide what the most important issues are for this particular election.
For me, I really like Obama...as a person. He seems like a good, honest man, a good family man. He seems smart, and I agree with many of viewpoints on social issues. From an economic perspective, while I think his goals are well-intentioned, I don't think he has executed them well, and I fear for our society economically if he should be re-elected.
I don't like Mitt Romney. I don't like many of his social views. However, I think he could do more for our country economically for the next 4 years.
So, I think part of my thought process is considering how much the president's personal views could translate into laws being passed that I wholeheartedly disagree with. Meaning--they would still have to be passed by congress, might come before SCOTUS, etc.
I don't feel secure with either vote. There are also no third party candidates that I am strongly aligned with. Whenever I take those tests, there is nobody that matches up very high with me. The highest anybody comes is in the 50s.

Yep, that's why I wouldn't vote Romney if I was against his stances on social issues.

Can I ask how Romney will be better for us economically? I don't remember seeing any of his plans, so maybe I just don't know about his policies yet.
I know I worry about my Pell grants for school and Paul Ryan (his VP) plans on drastically cutting the funding for them.

This is so true. I REFUSE to discuss politics or my choices with a lot of folks. If you say you support Romney than you are accused of hating gays and immigrants and wanting women to have back alley abortions. If you say you support Obama you are accused of being a socialist (or as one of my cousins calls me "a commie ******") who doesn't believe in hard work and capitalism and individual liberties.
I tend to keep my mouth shut a lot because folks will just try to sway you and insist that you see that THEIR side is the ONLY right way.

I completely agree. It is fine to have different beliefs than someone else but it is not fine to not be able to comprehend how others can have differing beliefs than you and still be intelligent or compassionate or a patriot etc.
