Before Jesus was crucified, he spent 40 days and nights in the fasting in the desert. Catholics are supposed to fast between meals on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, and abstain from eating meat on those days, as well as the rest of the Fridays during lent as a sacrifice in appreciation for what Jesus did for us.
Yes, that is probably the most accurate answer. The theme of 40 (hours/days/years) is very prevalent in the Bible. It goes back as far as Moses.

There are MANY stories of how it was started by the church in order to let the livestock grow and fatten during a time as well.
Fasting is one thing that yes is a tradition.
The Friday = No meat was created by the Church not bible based.
You are correct. It has nothing to do with the Bible as much as its a "tradition"

This is more of a catholic "tradition" rather than a "christian" one-
As far as I know- Most other denominations of christianity do not fast on Fridays!
I'm Episcopalian and we also do the no meat on Fridays (my dad even observes this on Wed). We're basically Catholics who don't recognize the pope, pray to saints or Virgin Mary.
On another note, I know some people who are Baptists and United Methodists and they fast for lent from sun up to sun down.
Hence the word most
My point is not a "christian" tradition- it more of something set by the denominations itself!
I was not disagreeing with you. I guess I should have prefaced my statement with "I agree" so it would have been clear. My bad

I once heard from a historical perspective that at the time when this tradition was started, that local fishermen went to the Pope about this and it then became common practice, in turn boosting their business. That may be a loose translation of what I heard and by no means do I say this is true. Who knows.
This is what I heard, too.
